A Wishlist for “Pokémon Z” is Unnecessary
Pokemon X & Y

On Thursday, June 26, I wrote up an article about a fan-made wish list for the phantom addition to Pokémon X and Y, aptly entitled “Pokémon Z”. The wish list details what Pokémon fans want in the game should it actually be a thing, and apparently some Pokémon fans already believe it’s under development, despite the fact that the third-gen remakes--Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire--are already on the way.

This struck me as rather puzzling, as I don’t believe that the Pokémon videogame series developer Game Freak would go through the trouble of making a third addition to the sixth generation of Pokémon games because of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are already in the works.

It has been a while since we’ve seen a third game be added to a Pokémon generation (the last official one being Pokémon Platinum back in fourth-gen), yes, but I don’t feel putting together a wish list for the phantom Pokémon Z is really necessary, as I have yet to see evidence to the contrary that Game Freak is indeed working on such a tile besides the third-gen remakes.

Not to see that the wish list in its entirety is invalid, of course. In fact, though I feel it’s unnecessary for Pokémon Z, I would like to see such wishes to be implemented into Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (one of which has already been confirmed). For reference, the fan-made wish list for Pokémon Z has been detailed below.

  • They would like to see more evolutions

  • They want more tutors in the game

  • They think that the difficulty setting should be adjustable

  • A good reason for levelling up in Pokemon to level 100

  • They want the shopping plaza from Black and White 2

  • The want the VS Seeker tool to return

  • Better ways of being able to catch legendary Pokemon

  • Pokémon contests like the ones from Pokemon Ruby,  Sapphire  and Emerald

  • A story line post game that would justify having to complete the Pokedex and breeding them

It’s already been confirmed that Pokémon contests will be returning to the third-gen remakes, and while I can see why fans would like it introduced in Pokémon Z, it just seems to me like a waste of resources since such a thing will already happen with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

However, I actually do mostly agree with the rest of the wish list, just not for Pokémon Z. Some entries in particular I agree with more so than others.

I get why fans would want to see more evolutions of pokémon, but I feel that’s already taken up by the Mega Evolutions--assuming the list entry only refers to normal evolution, i.e leveling up, trading or with a stone. If the entry also infers Mega Evolutions, then yeah, more power to that.

The shopping plaza was a nice addition to Pokémon Black and White 2, and I remember myself obsessing with getting as many stores and as many people there as possible--It was a nice break from the slow grind of leveling up your pokémon in order to beat the next Gym Leader.

I like the entry for being provided with a reason to level up your pokémon to level 100. In my experience, pokémon levels ranging from 70 to 90 seem to do the job well enough, so getting to level 100 was either something to gloat about or a personal achievement (sometimes both). So, to be provided with extras or bonuses for training one or more pokémon to 100 would be a nice goal to strive for, even if it would be tedious.

One thing that really caught eye was the entry for a post-game storyline that would justify completing the PokéDex (other than receiving an in-game certificate) and breeding pokémon. I’m reminded of second generation when I look at this, as that had pretty much an entirely new campaign in the Kanto region once you were done with the Johto region; end-game content in any regard is good for those who are looking for long-term investment of time.

Pokemon X & Y

The fan-made wish list is something I’d like to see in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, as Game Freak will be developing those games anyway, so why not apply this wish list to those remakes? Makes sense to me, at least.

In case of the (probably) highly unlikely event that either Nintendo or Game Freak would read this article, let me also add what I want to see in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

I like the functionality and the little extra options and achievements you get in Pokémon Black and White 2, such as unlocking new locations, new difficulty modes, and collecting those little token badges that represented your completed achievement as well.

I also like the level of detail of the second-gen remakes, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver--especially in the games’ audio. Hearing the sound effects change when walking from surface to surface--be it grass, pavement, wood, etc.--was something I really favored about the second-gen remakes, and needless to say I was disappointed when they didn’t return in the following Pokémon games.

To be honest, if I could have HeartGold / SoulSilver with the functionality and options and extras of Black and White 2, then I would be very happy indeed with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Also--as a personal request, please reintroduce pokémon walking behind you! That feature was what definitely won me over for the second-gen remakes, and I have been wanting to see it return since Pokémon Black and White.

I look forward to reading up on what the third-gen remakes will offer pokémon fans once more information arises.

[Side note: this article’s featured image by no means serves to discredit the artist you came up with the design for what Pokémon Z’s boxart may look like--it’s actually quite authentic! The image’s source link has been included below.]
