Mortal Kombat X DLC Wish List

Mortal Kombat X DLC Wish List

Choose your destiny…

Mortal Kombat is known for breaking the mold of the fighting genre in many ways. The ultra-bloody, ultra-violent fatalities are one of the most obvious examples, but it’s innovative in other ways as well. For instance, I’ve always found the story telling to be one of the most intriguing elements of this franchise. The dark tale it weaves throughout kept me on the edge of my seat for years. It was one of the first games that I truly felt invested in on an intellectual level, as I legitimately wanted to know who these fighters were, where they came from and where they were going.

And that’s what a good fighting game is all about right? The fighters!

Unlike a classic such as Street Fighter (where very little attention was paid to who Ryu or Ken were in the early days), Mortal Kombat has always possessed one of the most robust and eclectic rosters around. That tradition continues even today. After several sequels, a reboot and now yet another sequel on the horizon, the who’s who of what will make up the select screen is a hot button topic for debate. Even though we’ve not seen the full reveal of our cast just yet, some are already speculating who will be featured as the traditional “guest” character. If you’re unfamiliar with NetherRealm Studios’ recent outings, allow me to explain. In both Mortal Kombat 2009 and Injustice: God’s Among Us , we were treated to special DLC that featured cross-over fighters you wouldn’t normally see in games like these. Scorpion spent his days burning up the streets of Gotham and Metropolis, while the likes of Freddy Krueger and Kratos cracked skulls with our favorites from the Mortal Kombat gallery. While Ed Boon did recently confirm the upcoming MKX will likely continue this tradition (as DLC has proven to be a nice chunk of change in the past), he is still mum on whom exactly it will be.

Yesterday I gave a fun list of my UFC fantasy picks , and today I thought I’d do the same for my beloved Mortal Kombat series. So drop in those quarters fighting fans and let’s take a look at my ideal select screen (if Ed Boon were to turn over the DLC picks to yours truly)…

Batman / Azrael (Knightfall):

There’s already been a bit of speculation regarding Batman’s future in the MK franchise. However, it appears that Ed Boon’s latest comments seem to shoot down the possibility (stating he has no desire for Batman or Superman to have their heads ripped off). But just for the sake of argument, I think the version of Batman we see in the Knightfall comics of the early ‘90s would be perfect. This is where another character stands in for Bruce Wayne (after being paralyzed by Bane). The armor looks sweet and Azrael is not restricted by the same moral code as his predecessor. So does that mean we could finally see a DC hero perform a fatality for the first time?

M. Bison (Street Fighter):

This harkens back to one of those age old debates: the Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat saga. While M. Bison (in his current form) would certainly need some revamping in order to make him appear more at home in the MK universe, I can totally see it happening. His move set is not all that different from Raiden’s and his unique soul powers would lend themselves to some interesting combos (similar to that of Noob Saibot I’d imagine). Who doesn’t want to see video game’s worst dictator finally do something wicked…like exploding a fighter’s head with his glowing blue hands?! Plus, could you imagine what it would be like if he faced off against Shang Tsung? MIND BLOWN.

Mortal Kombat X DLC Wish List

Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13 th ):

Some may consider this a cheat pick, as technically this idea has already been floated on various forums and blogs (along with the Predator). However, I still claim credit, as I’ve wanted to see this for some time. In fact, when they announced Freddy Kruger as DLC, I was sure that Jason wasn’t far behind. It seemed like an absolute perfect fit (WB even owned the rights to the character at the time). However, even though it wasn’t meant to be in 2009, I do retain some glimmer of hope we still might see this happen in the future. His rotting corpse and hockey mask are MADE for this series. And let’s face it, who knows more about fatalities than this guy?! My only request: stick with the classic look seen above.

While my UFC list was completely off the wall , I feel that some of these suggestions are more in-keeping with the spirit of the game. Of course, a company like Capcom would never sign-off on such a venture, the other two are at least within the realm of possibility. Having said that, I think who Boon will actually pick as this year’s guest star remains as big a question mark to me as anyone else. At this point, the choices are indeed wide open.

So who would you like to see join in on the spine pulling fun? Are you a die-hard that will download the DLC no matter what? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below…which I have now dubbed “The Pit” for the remainder of this article.
