How A Civil War Movie Could Change EVERYTHING!

How A Civil War Movie Could Change EVERYTHING!

A war for the ages begins very soon!

I’d like to think I’m dialed in to most aspects of pop culture these days. After all, that’s kind of in my job description. I need to keep my finger on the pulse of all the goings-on regarding gaming, movies, comics and more (sometimes even before info is made available to the general public). However, I have to admit that I didn’t see Marvel’s recent announcement coming. When rumors began to swirl that Robert Downey Jr. was in fact in talks to reprise his role as Tony Stark, I (as many of you) simply assumed they’d churn out a fourth movie in the aging franchise and be done with it.

Wow, was I SO wrong or what?!

Of course I’m referring to the war to end all wars…Marvel’s upcoming Civil War movie! We reported on the constant flip-flopping Mr. Downey did in the press leading up to the recent unveiling (spilling the beans on Ellen then tamping down said rumors just a few hours later on Letterman), as the studio was probably hoping to keep the lid on things a while longer. Coming just days after the reveal of another comic planned for summer, we officially received the most epic news any fan of the superhero genre could hope for! It would appear that, instead of simply allowing the current Phase 2 and 3 films to run their course into the events of Avengers 3 (and letting that be that), Marvel has thrown us a curve ball and potentially blown the doors wide open for a possible ten year film dynasty beyond 2016! Iron Man will return in Captain America 3 instead of a stand-alone film as previously suspected, with War to follow sometime later (thus setting the stage for an all new phase beyond this initial period). Naturally it’s unclear how this will affect the outcome of Avengers 3 , as Thanos is expected to wipe out many of our familiar faces as he does in print form. No doubt, this series is often considered one of the most legendary stories of hero v. hero strife we’ve ever read (rivaling iconic arches such as Age of Apocalypse or even the Infinity Gauntlet itself).

So why should you be excited about Marvel’s Civil War ?

There are a couple of really good reasons. First off, if you’re unfamiliar with the storyline, prepare yourself for something quite different than you’re used to. The plot revolves around the Superhuman Registration Act, which comes about after several incidents of death and destruction on a large scale prompts the government to step in. The bill states anyone with “superman abilities” must register as a weapon of mass destruction, make their true identities known and work under an agency like S.H.I.E.L.D. or some other such outfit (much like a police officer or civil servant). The battle lines are drawn, as villains and heroes alike take sides. Supporters led by Tony Stark face off against their former brethren now on the other side of the isle, helmed by Captain America (who opposes it on the grounds it violates civil liberties). If it sounds much like the political strife caused by the Patriot Act of the early-mid 2000s, that’s because it’s based on many of same events. However, there is greater call to be psyched about this idea than just the prospects of a fun time at the theater and a bucket of popcorn. I for one wasn’t clear if Marvel characters had a future beyond Avengers 3 , but it now seems a myriad of branching pathways have opened up before us in light of this news!

How A Civil War Movie Could Change EVERYTHING!

Civil War is one of the first cross-over events of its kind that could potentially bring other franchises into the fold beyond just a token cameo. One key plot point is Peter Parker infamously joining with Tony Stark, acquiring his own suit of armor and becoming “Iron” Spider-Man. Imagine if they use this as a spring board to recast many of the current crop of characters, possibly spinning off all new sets of Sony or FOX films in completely new directions? The impacts to the multi-verse are now endless! In hind-sight, it’s clear the scene in Captain America: The Winter Solider (where Black Widow gets hauled up in-front of congress) was an echo of things to come. The studio intended to plant the seed for Civil War early on, as the tensions between Stark and Rogers will likely get amped WAY up in Captain’ 3.

I assure you comic fans, you’d be wise to keep a close eye on any Civil War news that falls your way. It’s both the beginning and end of epic happenings at Marvel that will carry us all into the 2020s!
