Transition of The Industry

Transition of The Industry

The X Com boardgame is soon to be released upon the world, and it could represent a larger movement for a trend that’s been building up in gaming for a year or two now.

For some time now, both a rise in local multiplayer and a return to tabletop gaming have been growing within the gaming community. I can’t help but see the X Com boardgame as the convergence of these two fads. If the game is marketed properly and proves to be a hit, it could pave the way for cross-appeal between fans of the two different worlds. Ultimately, that’s a good thing all around, and could lead to other potential crossovers down the road.

Like what, you ask?

Imagine a Betrayal At House On The Hill video game. Imagine a digital online version of Cards Against Humanity for smartphones and tablets. How about a Fable tabletop RPG? Or even a Monster Hunter board game.

Again, if the market supports such experiments, we could be in for a series of small and major releases that stretch the divide between the world of tabletop gaming and video games–and I’m all for it.

Transition of The Industry

We’ve already seen a move towards this form of cross-pollination for a few years now, with ticket to ride and other table top games being avalible for tablets, but what I’m talking about is more about refinement and evolution–not simply translation. What matters when it comes to games of all types is the fun factor. If that can be captured, it doesn’t matter if the medium is tactile or digital; all that will count is how much fun the players are having.
