Has The Wii U Version Made the 3DS Version of Smash Obsolete?

Has The Wii U Version Made the 3DS Version of Smash Obsolete?

Let’s ask a serious question right now. What use is the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. now that the Wii U version is coming out in a few weeks? No, seriously. I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes and thinking that I’m just another person complaining about how popular Smash is, but bear with me here. What use does the 3DS version have once the Wii U version comes out?

The Wii U version excels over the 3DS version in every way, whether you are a casual or professional player. It has more modes, more stages, a better control scheme in the Gamecube controller, it supports more players, has more co-op modes, and more.

But that’s not all! The 3DS version of Smash has a lot of other problems. Even local matches sometimes lag due to the unreliable nature of wireless connections. The 3DS thumb pad has been breaking left and right, as it wasn’t meant for such rapid and rigorous activity as Smash Bros. Players are complaining that their smashes and tilts aren’t coming out right, and that fine control is nearly impossible to attain.

The only thing that the 3DS version has that the Wii U version doesn’t is “Smash Run.” This mode is the pseudo one player labyrinth mode which sees multiple players raising their stats, using items, fighting against bosses, and eventually facing off against each other in a randomized 4 player battle. However, this is being replaced with so many other modes including the Master and Crazy orders modes, the new Smash Tour mode, co-op classic mode, Event mode, so on so forth. I can’t honestly see anyone taking out their 3DS specially to play Smash Run.

The main advantage of the 3DS is portability. I’ve heard people say “well with the 3DS version, you can take it to cons and play with people whenever.” Sure, I’ll give you that. But let me ask you this: what convention have you gone to that doesn’t have a gaming room? What gaming room have you been to that doesn’t have multiple setups playing Smash Bros. 24/7? It seems like conventions are well equipped to feed your Smash addiction.

So then I heard people say, “Well you can play the 3DS version on a bus or a plane.” Against who? Are you seriously going to ask around on public transport to see if anyone just so happens to be carrying Smash with them? Are you just going to wait with an open room hoping someone drops in by chance? That seems a little absurd doesn’t it? Are you just going to play single-player? Why? Remember the 3DS has fewer single-player modes and you can’t really increase your skillz because you won’t be using your control scheme of choice for the Wii U version… unless your control scheme of choice is the 3DS in which case you are basically just wrong. Not to mention there are plenty of other single-player experiences on the 3DS, like Professor Layton , which are more well suited to long plane rides.

Frankly, it seems like the 3DS version of Smash was really little more than just a 40 dollar demo, and Nintendo got us to buy it eagerly. I don’t know about you, but I think my 3DS Smash cart will go completely unused after the Wii U version comes out. What about you? Will you keep playing 3DS Smash after the Wii U version hits store shelves? Let us know in the comments.
