PS4 Browser Kills the Dragon Age Keep Experience

PS4 Browser Kills the Dragon Age Keep Experience

I adore the Dragon Age series. I even loved Dragon Age II , despite its many flaws. The wait for Dragon Age: Inquisition is driving me crazy. Simply put, if there’s something related to the series out there, I will do everything possible to get in on it.

Which is why I was so excited about the Dragon Age Keep . Seeing as how I played the previous two games on the PS3, I knew I was going to have to resort to BioWare’s world state creator to ensure everything was right when my game began. I ended up eventually accumulating PC backups of both games, but I’m going to want to play this next one with friends and all my friends are on the PS4.

The problem is the Dragon Age Keep beta. This website is supposed to allow people to alter a Tapestry and customize their world. It sounded good, in theory. However, I was quite surprised to hear I was supposed to use my PS4’s web browser to access the keep and create my “worlds” instead of BioWare making custom tools for consoles, but okay. Fine.

Spoiler alert–the fact that I’m writing this right here means it didn’t go well. It isn’t because the Dragon Age Keep is in beta, either. Things went south because the PS4’s web browser is a lot like the PS3 and Vita’s web browsers–not very good.

My gaming monitor is a 19″ HDTV. Not exactly ideal, I know, but you have to make do with what you can get. This means when I open a page in the web browser, I have to zoom all the way in if I want to see anything, then usually have to stand up and get in nice and deep like to make anything out. For the duration of my Dragon Age Keep experience, I had to be inches away, constantly moving around the page to see anything and get everything done.

Then, there were the errors. It took a lot of button mashing and reloading to get the Tapestry to appear. Twice while customizing events, I encountered errors that required reloading. Since the PS4’s browser is what it is, I found myself flailing and trying to click everything to put a save state together, because I couldn’t set things up properly.

PS4 Browser Kills the Dragon Age Keep Experience

I know that the Dragon Age Keep is in beta. Many of you reading will attribute my problems to that or to user error. If I were in your place, I’d probably do the same. Except, I ended up using the Dragon Age Keep on my PC yesterday, after my harrowing PS4 experience, and it worked perfectly in Chrome. It didn’t even take very long to load the story segments, and did everything it was supposed to. I ended up getting everything the way I wanted there and setting my save state.

So, I suppose this is more of a rant about the PS4 web browser, rather than an attack on the Dragon Age Keep . Though, I do wish that BioWare had acknowledged the failings of Sony’s console browsers and instead made some tiny app available in the PlayStation Store for Dragon Age Inquisition alterations for people who wanted to do it on their console. Surely they know what console browsers are like by now.
