The Tale of the Masked Smasher

The Tale of the Masked Smasher

The Smash community has had some really crazy stories come out of it recently. First there was the story of the young girl who beat pros left and right, which may have turned out to be a sham. Now, there is the story of the “Masked Smasher” Otherwise known as Falcomaster 3000.

The story begins at a local weekly Smash Bros. tournament in Edmonton, Alberta. The tournament featured Smash Bros. Melee , the competitive Smash of choice for the pro-gaming community. A mysterious entrant joined the tournament, wearing a ski-mask and sunglasses to hide his face. When asked his name, he merely wrote “Falcomaster 3000” on a piece of paper.

The entrant then proceeded to play through the tournament without giving any clue to his identity. He did not speak, eat, drink, or ever take off his mask. He made absolutely no sounds and never left the venue. No one at the venue noticed a regular missing, and the strange masked man only wore jeans and a black t-shirt, so no one could tell who he was due to his personal style either.

And he was good. He easily made his way through the brackets, destroying everyone he came up against with, of course, Falco. Sometimes he would change to Marth or Fox if he felt that the matchup was not in his favor, and he would always win. He made his way through the entire tournament, getting a seat in Grand Finals, and eventually taking home the gold. He was asked how he felt about winning the tournament, to which he only responded with a silent thumbs up.

To this day, no one knows who the Masked Smasher is. It sounds dumb and made up I know, but the mystery persists. The Edmonton community has gone over all of their members and has not managed to link any of them with the Masked Smasher’s appearance. The current theory is that he is someone from another Smash Bros. community who was in the area and decided to come by to play, without revealing his identity.

The Tale of the Masked Smasher

Of course, that hasn’t stopped online communities from coming up with their own hilarious origin theories. Some speculate that he is, in fact, the spirit of Smash Bros. Melee . With the latest update to Project M recently going live, and the upcoming release of Smash Bros. on the Nintendo Wii U, the spirit of Smash Bros. Melee took physical form to remember why we all got into the Smash tournament scene in the first place. Some believe that he is just one of many in the Falcomaster line, starting from 1, and ending up at 3000. He is a manufactured Smash Bros. player as you will.

Who do you think this mysterious Masked Smasher is? Do you think we will ever see him again? Will he make an appearance at this year’s EVO? Or will the legend of the Masked Smasher stop here, never to show his masked face again?

One thing is for certain, we need more awesome pro gamer personalities like this.
