Mewtwo Might Not Be DLC In Smash Bros.

Mewtwo Might Not Be DLC In Smash Bros.

There has been a lot of conflicting information being released about Mewtwo, the first “DLC” character for this generation’s Super Smash Bros.

First, Nintendo announced that he would be an exclusive character for players who bought both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. While he hasn’t been fully made yet, he would become available at a later date for people with both versions to download.

… if you register both versions. For that you have to be a member of Club Nintendo, which you might not be. That’s OK, because if you aren’t, you can just join now and register using the pin on the inside of the game cover. Didn’t buy the hardcopy version? Well that’s OK too, because if you are part of Club Nintendo these games are already registered when you buy them. Well what if you weren’t a member when you bought them?

Uh… Nintendo will get back to you on that one.

People who follow these steps will be asked to enter their shipping address in order to receive a Smash Bros. soundtrack. They will then receive a Mewtwo DLC code via e-mail in Spring 2015. Yes, we know, that is a long way away.

However, apparently you can get Mewtwo another way too. According to the fine print “Mewtwo DLC may be available for purchase in the future.” So maybe people could just shell out five bucks and get him either way.

This is what it says on the American page. On the Japanese page, the wording is slightly stronger, suggesting that there are already plans to sell him as a standalone DLC in the future.

But then there are the numerous statements that Masahiro Sakurai has made saying that DLC isn’t planned at all. He told IGN that there aren’t any plans for paid DLC at all and he told Videogamer that the team wasn’t working on anything at all (courtesy of Kotaku ). “Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people,” Sakurai said in the Videogamer interview. “I can’t yet give you an answer about whether the price would justify the costs and criticisms mentioned above. “Sakurai also said that Mewtwo will be an “experiment” to see whether or not Smash Bros. players will use digital content distribution.

Then there is the matter of the original Smash Bros. roster leak. The same people who leaked the first roster also came up with possible DLC characters, including characters like Wolf and Lucas who did not make the transition from Brawl to Smash 4 . We then have to ask whether or not these leaks were hoaxes, even though the roster remained true, or whether or not Nintendo really is looking to expand into DLC in the future. Mewtwo was on that list by the way, and many times was pegged as the first character to be released, though many fans say this could just be a coincidence.

What do you think? Will Mewtwo become paid DLC/ Will Nintendo offer any other paid DLC for Smash Brothers ? Are people who aren’t members of Club Nintendo just screwed? Let us know what you think in the comments.
