Don’t be Disillusioned by Amiibo Rarity

Don’t be Disillusioned by Amiibo Rarity

Gather round, my children, and let me drop some wisdom on you all. For I’ve been where you’re going. I was at the forefront of the NFC figure craze. I championed the Skylanders, back when people still looked at someone funny for buying 6 Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures figures at once and proudly admitting they weren’t for some child, but for me. I know the feeling of seeing one especially rare or cool figure, say Sunburn the phoenix-dragon or Hot Dog the fire dog, and then never seeing it in any stores.

I imagine a lot of you are feeling that way about the Amiibo of Marth. Now that Nintendo’s Amiibos have appeared, select figures have been discovered to be “rare.” Yes, I know I put the word rare in quotations. I’ll get to that in a second. The fact is, some people are going crazy over this the Amiibos that are proving hard to find, when really they shouldn’t be so worried or worked up.

Before you get worked up, no. I’m not saying Marth, or any other of the rarer Amiibos like the Wii Fit Trainer or Villager, aren’t worth it because the quality isn’t there. While it is true that some Marth Amiibos have wonky faces, those appear to be isolated incidents. As you can see from the image at the top of this article, I have a Marth that looks perfectly normal. It isn’t as pretty as the prototype, but it’s still serviceable.

No, what I’m saying is that this rarity is artificial. It never lasts. Above, when I made my case for knowing what’s best in this situation, I cited two “rare” Fire Skylanders. Each was extremely hard to find when originally released. Two years later, they’re not. Sunburn is only available still in the Dragon’s Peak Adventure Pack, but you can usually find that for under $20. The past weekend, I saw dozens of Hot Dogs, a 2013 Skylander, at Five Below. No matter how hard a NFC figure may be to find at launch, it will never remain rare.

The Disney Infinity Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey is another one. Everyone was going on about how it would be rare, because it was Mickey and such. True, it was somewhat hard to find for a few weeks at the beginning of this year, but that didn’t last. Soon, it wasn’t difficult to find a Mickey on a store shelf. The flurry of excitement didn’t last, and soon people were able to find him at affordable prices.

Don’t be Disillusioned by Amiibo Rarity

It’s easy to get swept up in figure hype. Especially with Amiibos, since they’re physical manifestations of your favorite characters and Super Smash Bros. is out right now. They are exciting and new! Everyone is talking about them! Now that you see them, you want them all! I understand.

However, it’s best to sit back and take a breath. Nintendo needs Amiibos to do well, so the company is going to be sending out tons of these. We’ve only seen the release of the first run. Restocks are inevitable. Especially with Black Friday upon us. Don’t go paying double or triple the price for a NFC figure so soon after launch. I guarantee if you’re willing to give it a few weeks, maybe even a month, there’ll be so many Marths on store shelves that you’ll be sick of seeing his occasionally lopsided face.
