Bayonetta 2 Finally Gives You a Reason to Buy a Wii U

Bayonetta 2 Finally Gives You a Reason to Buy a Wii U

Let’s get this out of the way right up front: the least-Nintendo game ever released on one of their platforms is hands-down the best reason to buy a Wii U.

Bayonetta was first released on previous-gen systems a few years back. It was met with mixed critical reception, and lukewarm sales. The game was a lightning rod for feminist criticism, but at the same time many who reviewed it couldn’t help but praise the game’s solid combat system and over-the-top storytelling. Put simply, no matter what you may have thought of the game’s subject matter, there was no denying that it was highly-playable, and an excellent entry in the third-person-action genre. But, with those luke-warm sales, the future of the series was uncertain to say the least.

Enter Nintendo. In a move that I don’t think anyone could have predicted, the Japanese juggernaut known primarily for family-friendly releases tossed out a life-preserver to Platinum Studios, giving them the chance to develop a sequel to Bayonetta on their (at the time) new platform, the Wii U. Platinum took the deal and ran, and so development began on Bayonetta 2 .

While it was great to hear that Bayonetta 2 was in production, what remained to be seen is how the final product would actually turn out. Well, I’m here to tell you that not only is it a great follow-up to the original game, but it’s also one of the best games of the year. What makes the game amazing is it’s tight controls and over-the-top storytelling; the action is quick and responsive, the game is visually gorgeous despite hardware limitations, and the story escalates in ridiculousness the way few other games out there have the stomach to shoot for. The Bayonetta series makes something as over-the-top as Asura’s Wrath look tame in comparison.

So, with all of that being said, here’s to the start of a long relationship between Platinum Studios and Nintendo. If the two can continue feeding off of each other’s strengths, I think the end result will be more and more games that are built to appeal specifically towards a segment of the gaming public who feel that their needs aren’t being met. If you long for a solid action game that just doesn’t exist on pc/xb1/ps4, look no further than Bayonetta 2 .
