Are Fighting Games Giving Us A Reason To Choose Between Consoles

The Street Fighter V teaser trailer just got leaked to the internet last night, and it’s pretty interesting. Not because of any gameplay that was revealed or anything like that, there really wasn’t a whole lot of gameplay to be seen. Rather, the game is quite interesting because it will only be coming out on PC and PS4, whereas its predecessor was on all consoles. In fact, many people believed that Street Fighter IV was best when played on an Xbox 360 because it strangely had less button lag there.

In this console generation, there are few reasons to choose between one console or the other. There are very few console exclusive games anymore. The top selling games right now are all multi-console, games like Call of Duty and Destiny , and most of these games also come out on PC, so if you have a high quality gaming PC you really don’t even have to get a console. Yet, fighting games have, for some reason, refused to play that game, sticking to console exclusivity.

The first game we saw this with was Killer Instinct . Microsoft owns Rare and thus owns the Killer Instinct IP, so it was pretty obvious that this was going to be a console exclusive, and for a long time we thought that was going to be the only one. Then, Guilty Gear Xrd came out only for Sony consoles, which was interesting but not particularly out of character. “Anime Games” like Under Night In-Birth and Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax end up PlayStation exclusives all the time. But usually the big releases like Blazblue get to be multi-console releases.

But Street Fighter has rarely been a console exclusive. Even back when the SNES was the console to have, Street Fighter came out on the Genesis, and when the PlayStation was released and Street Fighter Alpha came out, it ALSO came out on the SNES at the same time, though in a toned down version. So the fact that Street Fighter V is going to be exclusively on the PS4 and PC is a pretty big deal.

More importantly it finally gives us something to decide on. Since most of the big name games out there are multi-console, there wasn’t a whole lot motivating us to buy one console or another. If anything we were buying consoles on the promise of games that will come out in the future. However, now we see that fighting games are kind of drawing a line in the sand. Now we have to see what platforms other upcoming releases will be on. Mortal Kombat X is set to be multi-platform, but what about other games that will come out in this generation? What about a new entry in the VS. series? What about Tekken ?

What do you think? Are fighting games going console exclusive? If so, which console are you backing? Let us know in the comments.
