Telltale Games Working On a New Original IP

Telltale Games Working On a New Original IP

Telltale games, the studio behind award-winning games such as The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us , has been incredibly busy recently. Not only are they working on sequels to their most loved IPs, new games Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones , and the absolutely bizarre project that is Minecraft: Story Mode , they are now working on a brand new original IP as well.

The news comes following a change of management in the studio. President and co-founder Kevin Pruner will be moving into a new positon as CEO. Meanwhile former CEO and co-founder Dan Connors will become an executive advisor. As it stands, no other information regarding position changes in the studio has been released.

Telltale also did not release info on what this IP was, exactly. There was no mention of a release date, platforms, or a development schedule.  It would be safe to say that the studio has a lot on their plate. Considering the fact that they are still developing Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands , have just announced development on Minecraft: Story Mode , and confirmed a third season of The Walking Dead , this new IP would be their fifth concurrent project, which is a lot for a small studio to take on.

Many fans are calling for this new IP to return to a more familiar adventure game format. While Telltale has made great advances in the cinematic genre of games, weaving splendid narratives that change based on player choice, their games bear very little resemblance to the old point and click adventures that they formed their studio on. Some of Telltale’s first games came from the old Lucasarts catalog, including Sam and Max and Monkey Island , games that were known for their point and click gameplay. It would be interesting to see the studio return to that formula in the future, producing a game that focuses on puzzle solving and inventory management instead of dialogue choice.

If you include all remakes and game collections, then this new IP would be the 30 th title that the 10-year-old studio has worked on. Many forget some of the early IPs that Telltale worked on, titles such as CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder, Back to the Future: The Game, and Jurassic Park: The Game , which pushed them into the world of licensed properties. This will be the first unlicensed game that Telltale will be making in over 4 years.

Telltale Games Working On a New Original IP

Telltale has done some amazing work over the past few years, so we are understandably excited to see what they have in store for us with a new IP. Aside from the fact that it’s episodic, all information about the IP is still being kept under wraps. So what do you think it is? Another puzzle game? Another cinematic game? Maybe a return to the old days of point and click adventures? Let us know what you think in the comments.
