New Nintendo 3DS Coming to America, But Do We Want It?

New Nintendo 3DS Coming to America, But Do We Want It?

For the past few months we have run stories about Nintendo’s “New Nintendo 3DS.” This new handheld is essentially Nintendo’s half way followup to the original 3DS. It plays all 3DS games, but thanks to increased processing power, it also plays some exclusive games that the 3DS can’t. It also comes with a second analog nub that can be used for increased functionality, two extra shoulder buttons, and head tracking software in its 3D camera that does away with forcing you to keep your head in one sweet spot to make the 3D work. Finally, it also has a built in NFC censor which will allow you to use your Amiibos in certain games.

However, the handheld’s launch in America seems to be limited in scope. For example, we won’t actually be getting any “New Nintendo 3DS” units. We will only be getting the “New Nintendo 3DS XL.” This is a bit disappointing as the smaller models A) were less expensive and B) had a really cool feature which allowed them to swap out custom faceplates. In fact these custom faceplates are part of the launch marketing in Europe, which will be getting a line of 12 custom plates on day one!

Special editions of the New Nintendo 3DS XL will be available, though their faceplates will not be swappable. There will be a bundle for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Edition and one for Majora’s Mask HD, each which will come with a game and a special themed model of New Nintendo 3DS XL. Release dates and prices for these models have not yet been released.

Perhaps the strangest thing about the release of the New Nintendo 3DS XL in America is that the console does not come with a charger. Yes, you heard that right. Nintendo is selling a console without selling any way to give it power. If you already have a Nintendo 3DS, you can use your old charger. Of course, this makes it harder to charge your old 3DS, but let’s face it, you are probably just upgrading and won’t touch your old handled like… ever. However, this is particularly problematic for people who DON’T own an old 3DS. They have to go out and purchase a charger individually, which adds hidden cost to the console, and will be entirely dependent on whether or not Nintendo has extra chargers in stock.

It feels as if Nintendo is specifically making the New Nintendo 3DS for people to upgrade, but that seems rather blunt of them. The 3DS XL isn’t even all that old. Only two and a half years have passed since its release. Expecting current 3DS owners to trade up AGAIN is a bit presumptuous, especially at a $200 price point.
