Evolve Strategy for Beginners – How to not Suck as the Monster

Evolve just came out, and it’s an incredibly fun experience. Unfortunately, it can also be an incredibly frustrating one if you find yourself repeatedly dying to a pack of bloodthirsty mercenaries. In fact, the enjoyment of Evolve hinges on both sides being skilled at what they do. If the monster isn’t great, the game is over in a few minutes, and if the hunters aren’t great, the whole game is a half hour long game of tag where no one sees each other.

So we have decided to put together a few short tips for beginners to help you survive the environments of Shear for just a little longer. Today we tackle the strategy and finesse of being a giant rampaging monster.

Tip #1 – Don’t Run!

Your basic movement in Evolve as a monster is running, but running leaves tracks everywhere and tracks lead the hunters right to you. Use the monster’s sneak mode whenever possible. This keeps tracks off the field and basically means the hunters have to run around semi-blind looking for you. Only run if you absolutely need to get somewhere quick.

Tip #2 – Leap a Lot

Leaping, obviously, does not leave tracks. The same goes for hovering with the Kraken. Use these special movement options as much as possible to traverse lots of ground without leaving a trail. Also if the hunters are attacking you, start leaping so that it’s hard for them to keep their aim on you.

Tip #3 – Use Other Beasties to Your Advantage

The other beasts of Shear are pretty dangerous if the hunters encounter them one by one. If you are going to run, make your tracks lead right past another dangerous enemy, allowing the environment to pick off your opponents for you.

Tip #4 – Pay Attention to the Environment

Speaking of the environment, too many people just run into crops of birds and knock down trees willy nilly, leaving clear indicators as to where they are. Evolve as the monster is, essentially, a stealth game, and if you just noisily blast through the forest, you probably won’t last long.

Tip #5 – Don’t Stay in One Place

Because Evolve is a stealth game, there is this desire to stay in one place when you feel safe and chow down and evolve. However, the first trapper that players have access to has a dog that always homes in on your position, so try and keep moving. Not every team uses this tracker, but in general it’s better to stay on the move rather than camp out, because if the opponent simply moves in a lawnmower pattern they will eventually find you.

Tip #6 – Don’t Only Move Forward

The hunters are chasing you, and if you simply move forward they will have an easy time catching you. Instead, vary your directions as much as possible. Weave through tunnels, trudge through lakes, and leap from tall places. Make your path as screwy as possible. Heck, even double back on yourself just to confuse them. In fact one of the best things you can do is run in one direction, and then sneak in the other direction, so hunters follow your tracks but go in opposite direction from where you’re headed.

Tip #7 – Try to Separate the Hunters

The hunters only really work well as a team. If you can isolate one, they will go down quickly. The best way to do this is to try to back one into a corner, or knock them down a cliff. Using your special movement or ranged abilities will help with this, and monsters like the Wraith specifically have abilities that trap and isolate hunters from the group. If the rest of the hunters start catching up, don’t just stay in the corner letting them pound you. Isolate another one!

Tip #8 – Never Stop Smelling

Smelling is your catch-all radar. It not only shows you where food is, but it also shows you where the hunters are. You should be smelling all the time. It doesn’t leave any trace and you can move while doing it. If you have rapid fire on your left mouse click button I’d say you should use it. It’s that good.

Tip #9 – Don’t Forget to Climb

Hunters tend to forget that stages in Evolve are three dimensional. As such, staying high is a great way to keep away from their sights. Leap from cliff to cliff and if you need to evolve, try to find the highest place you can. The hunters will spend forever looking on the ground and pass you right up.

Tip #10 – Focus on the Medic First

Unless the hunters are picking up perks from rare creature kills, they won’t have any way to heal themselves other than their medic. So take out that medic. If you see the medic, pursue it. It’s worth taking some damage to get the medic off the field. After that, everyone else will go down that much quicker.
