Stop Preordering the NX!

Stop Preordering the NX!

Nintendo recently confirmed that it’s working its next major gaming hardware, just like every other hardware maker is doing. The new system is code named the “NX,” and that’s about all we know. We don’t know if it’s going to be a console or a handheld or what its specs are going to be. It’s this huge gigantic mystery of a console, and people are already preordering it.

This is all thanks to EB Games Australia. They not only are offering pre-orders of the NX, they are also running a promotion for it. Their advertising slogan is What’s NX’T? Get it!? Cause the NX is the codename for the new Nintendo console? Of course, since no one even knows what the console looks like, their advertisements only show pictures of previous Nintendo consoles.

Speaking with Gamespot, an EB Games representative said that these pre-orders have been opened up due to fan demand. “Following the announcement Wednesday night, EB Games made the ‘NX’ available for preorder the next day,” the company said. “At EB Games we have a very loyal Nintendo fan base, many of whom love the opportunity to put their names down first for new products. As long as that demand exists, we will continue to give fans what they want and be at the forefront of gaming announcements.”

But frankly, I think this practice is pretty ethically sketchy. It’s taking advantage of hype in pretty much the worst way possible. It makes it seem like EB Games has more info than anyone else has, when in reality they don’t. In reality, they are taking your money for a system that doesn’t even exist yet.

Please read that carefully. The NX DOESN’T EVEN EXIST YET! It has no price. It has no specs. It has no games. How on Earth are you certain that you want one? I’m a game journalist and I likely won’t even get to see it at E3 this year because Nintendo is only in the planning phase! Nintendo hasn’t even played with the NX yet!

Stop Preordering the NX!

A lot of people say that they are ordering the NX because they want to be certain they will receive one, whenever it comes out, due to a sure lack of product due to demand. But we don’t know the demand yet. For that matter, Nintendo can ship enough consoles to meet demand. You have no idea how many consoles Nintendo will ship. You have no idea whether or not the NX is even a console!

You are doing nothing but locking yourself into a purchase based on hype alone. You are purchasing Nintendo excitement, and that’s all.

And frankly that’s stupid. I beg of you, everyone with a brain, stop preordering the NX. Doing this only sends a message to game developers that they can sell things based on brand name alone, and that is a horrible message to send. Don’t let Nintendo buy you just because they put their name on an idea. You can’t buy that idea. It doesn’t exist yet.

Or let’s put it this way. Every time you pre-order an NX, imagine that you have just pre-ordered a Nintendo Vitality Sensor. Yeah, now it seems stupid, doesn’t it?
