Deus Ex Still Matters

Deus Ex Still Matters

Recently, a new Deus Ex title was announced: Mankind Divided . The game will further explore the themes touched on in Human Revolution in addition to picking up where Adam Jensen’s story left off.

Deus Ex as a series is revered and legendary for a reason. It popularized cyberpunk in the world of video games, innovated branching story choices through gameplay, and presented its world through an incredibly strong narrative. For those out there who haven’t experienced the original, it’s highly recommended. With the addition of several different mods which are out there completely free of charge, it becomes an even stronger experience. And while it’s direct sequel stumbled a bit when it came to execution, Human Revolution brought the series back in fine form. Sure, there were those poorly designed boss fights, but the rest of the game was great.

Human Revolution was released at the tail end of the previous console generation to mostly-positive critical acclaim and sales that obviously warranted a sequel. It was a prequel to the original game, and showcased all of the events that lead up to the events of the original. A hybrid of mechanics from the first game, Fallout RPG conversations, and a fairly well-designed FPS element made for fun and engaging gameplay that encouraged exploration and responding to conversations in-character. The game was a good time, and reminded us of what was great about Deus Ex in the first place.

Deus Ex Still Matters

The announcement of Mankind Divided’s upcoming release is important because gaming needs more thoughtful science fiction and stories that pose moral and ethical questions. Deus Ex exists in a world built on discrimination, and that’s not something you see much of when it comes to storytelling in video games. Sure, it’s is built around gunplay and RPG management, but there are still interesting themes at work under the surface. That’s why Deus Ex is important, and should never become a dormant franchise.
