The PS4 Port of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster was Unnecessary

The PS4 Port of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster was Unnecessary

The Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster is now on the PS4. Every Sony platform owner can experience the adventures of Tidus and Yuna again! Isn’t it amazing? Isn’t it exciting? To be honest, not really. Rather, it’s a move that smacks of desperation and opportunism. Square Enix saw an easy opportunity to make a little extra money off of one of the last viable Final Fantasy games and exploited that.

It’s a shame, because the result is a port that didn’t have to exist. Though, to be honest, that’s something that can be said about many of the recent Final Fantasy ports. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, anyone ? The Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster may be even more disappointing, however, because it doesn’t offer any real reason to play it on the PS4.

One of the highlights of the game is the additional content. The Final Fantasy X: International and Final Fantasy X-2: International + Last Mission iterations are the ones included in the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster for the PS3. These include extra content like new fights, additional equipment, extra dresspheres and Garment Grids, and even a roguelike epilogue to Final Fantasy X-2 . Were it the first time we were getting this, it would be great, but we already got it a year and two months ago. Given the tendency of Sony system owners to stay within the family, odds are anyone interested in the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster already owns it.

It isn’t as though there are even improved visuals and audio to count on. There is only so much you can do with a PS2 game. The PS3 and Vita versions of the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster already accomplished everything that could be done. Will the PS4 version look a little more detailed and refined? Sure, especially given that it will be presented in 1080p. But does it look $49.99 good, given the PS3 version is now widely available for $19.99? I’d happily and always go for the one that’s less than half the price.

The PS4 Port of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster was Unnecessary

Do you know the only thing the PS4 version of the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster has that the PS3 and Vita version’s don’t? The original soundtrack. The other two variations only offer a remastered version of the games’ music, and those with a PS4 can swap that with the original, if they prefer. As someone who’s played the Vita version of the game, however, I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want the improved audio.

Sure, there are some PS4 owners who don’t have a PS3 or Vita and might want to play Final Fantasy X and/or X-2 again. They’ll probably appreciate the opportunity that Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster will afford them (probably not at $50, but maybe in a few months at half that). Still, I’d wager that number isn’t as high as Square Enix would like to believe. The Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster ‘s PS4 port is another shameless cash-in, another victim of the new Final Fantasy tradition.
