Seems Like Sony’s Doing the Ratchet & Clank Movie Right

Seems Like Sony’s Doing the Ratchet & Clank Movie Right

Things get tricky when it comes to movies based on video games. Adaptations are difficult when companies consider the existing lore and devoted fanbases. The Ratchet & Clank movie is one of those instances. People have grown up with this series. This is something that Sony has to get right and, fortunately, it seems like the company is doing exactly that.

You know, barring a delay and all. But still, sometimes delays are necessary, and that doesn’t spell doom for this Ratchet & Clank movie. Trust me. Let’s go over this.

To start, everyone involved is keeping the important people around. Everyone who helped make these characters come to life is going to be there for the Ratchet & Clank movie. James Arnold Taylor and David Kaye are both coming back as Ratchet and Clank. That honestly might be enough to assure someone this will go well. But bringing Jim Ward and Armin Shimerman along as Captain Qwark and Nefarious only clinches it. It shows a commitment to the brand. No one is jumping ship for more marketable, recognizable stars to convince people unfamiliar with the series to buy a ticket. It’s about expanding on what everyone already knows.

Still, only going with the original actors could have proved problematic too. You want to see a company make a significant investment in a film. Getting Paul Giamatti and Sylvester Stallone as Chairman Drek and Lieutenant Victor Von Ion was great. Pulling in John Goodman, Rosario Dawson, and Bella Thorne as Grimroth, Elaris, and Cora is even better. These are big names. Moreover, it was thoughtful. It shows a significant effort went into getting people who sound good and have a great range as actors. Sony didn’t grab names for the sake of having recognizable figures. The company went with people who know what they’re doing and have a history as character actors.

Even the delay is understandable. Insomniac is assisting with the Ratchet & Clank movie. Members of the staff are sharing assets, acting as consultants, and aiding in its creation. The PlayStation Blog lists all of the ways members of the studio are taking part. The script, character design, assets, and more all had the developer’s input, which will prove invaluable when the movie is released on April 29, 2016. Knowing we’ll have to wait a little longer and not see it this year is okay, since the final product is going to have such input from the creators.

The Ratchet & Clank movie is going to shape up to be something incredible. Sony and Insomniac are involved enough to ensure the final product will be true to the games we’ve been enjoying since the PlayStation 2. It’s going to tap into nostalgia, which is crucial to its success. At the same time, a significant investment has been put into also getting impressive actors normally not affiliated with the series on the project. It really seems like the Ratchet & Clank movie could be the first video game movie adaptation genuinely deserving of all kinds of hype.
