PlayStation Plus Subscribers Deserve PSP Games

PlayStation Plus Subscribers Deserve PSP Games

It’s often said that Sony’s PlayStation Plus is one of the best deals in gaming. That is absolutely true. The six free games per month, greater discounts on sale items, and most recently exclusive deals on newer releases are all substantial boons for anyone with a membership. There’s only one thing that could make it better, and that’s more games. To be more specific, more free portable games.

While the Vita is far from dying and does have a rich library for lovers of niche games, it isn’t getting as much attention as it should. The same goes for the PlayStation TV, a handy microconsole that has a habit of going on sale for half off. Both of these devices would benefit from a PlayStation Plus adjustment that would offer eight free games a month, as opposed to six, with the two additional offerings being PSP releases.

It would certainly help move units of both systems. Each is compatible with PSP games. The PlayStation TV is even turning into something of an impulse buy for those with PS3s and PS4s. But even for people who aren’t part of the PlayStation ecosystem otherwise, such a plan would improve PlayStation Plus subscription sales. As is, these people would only get two free games per month. Bump it up to four and more would opt in.

I mean, the games are already there. The PlayStation Store hadn’t really become a commonplace source of immediate entertainment during the PSP years, but there is a wealth of content from that handheld available online. The games are there. Give us a reason to care about them. Remind people they exist by offering two free each month. It isn’t as though they’re selling at premium price points these days. It isn’t uncommon to see old PSP downloads going for $5-$10/

Adding two PSP games to PlayStation Plus each month would even benefit their original publishers. Let’s be honest here. Outside of a few games like Persona 3 Portable and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky , there there isn’t a lot of demand for PSP games. People who were around when they were released have forgotten about them, and those new to Sony handhelds never heard about them in the first place. Giving away two for free each month reintroduces developers and publishers, garners goodwill, and perhaps encourages interest in other properties.

PSP games for all PlayStation Plus subscribers makes sense. PS3 and PS4 owners are already lucky enough with cross-buy to have instances where they’re getting at least two, sometimes more, games each month for consoles. Let handheld owners have the same kind of fun. They’ll appreciate it and be more likely to continually subscribe to the service.
