Next BlazBlue May Have Team Mechanics

Next BlazBlue May Have Team Mechanics

There have been a whole lot of BlazBlue re-releases over the past few years. If you have kept up faithfully with the series, you probably purchased BlazBlue Calamity Trigger , Continuum Shift and it’s DLC, Continuum Shift 2 and EX , Chrono Phantasma , and more. Now, another entry in the BlazBlue series is coming, and it doesn’t yet have a hilarious Japanese title.

Series head Toshimichi Mori recently talked with Siliconera about possibilities for the next installment, and it’s going to be more of a departure from the standard formula than you might think. First of all, the roster will likely surpass 30 playable characters, which is a humongous number, especially for a new IP that just launched last generation.

Second of all, now that the roster is so big, Mori has been considering adding team mechanics to the game. He wasn’t specific on how these mechanics would work, mostly because he isn’t sure himself. However, systems like Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament were mentioned. He seemed less keen on Marvel style tag mechanics, with excessively long combos, assists, and the like. However, he doesn’t particularly have a problem with real time character switching, especially considering the power the PS4 has. However, Mori does say that the “flashiness” of the game may have to be cut down if real time character switching were implemented, in order to save memory.

Mori also commented on the possibility for a Guilty Gear and BlazBlue crossover, but he says that is still a far ways away.

You can read his official statement below.

“I am planning to have the next story sometime next year and the next game will have the last 25% of the story.”

“What do the fans think about tag team battles?”

“There are two possible options. One is you would pick two or three characters like the Capcom vs. SNK 2 or simply choosing characters and tagging out like Tekken Tag Tournament ,” Mori added. “In Capcom vs. SNK 2 players choose characters and they come out in a certain order compared to Tekken Tag Tournament which has characters switching in real time. If you consider the PlayStation 4 system, both of these are possible. Those are the two directions I’m considering, what do you think of this? The flashiness might need to be cutdown if we implement this though.”

“I know the fans want to see a crossover with Guilty Gear but I don’t know how long that will take. If we are going to do it, we want to do it right. Ask Ishiwatari about this later.”
