Twitch’s Ban on Adult Only Games won’t Ruin Streaming

Twitch’s Ban on Adult Only Games won’t Ruin Streaming

Twitch made a pretty major announcement last week, one some may consider “unjust” or “censorship.” The company stated that it would no longer allow Adult Only games to be streamed. If a game has an Adult Only rating in the United States, someone can’t broadcast themselves playing it. That means footage of a few titles, like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Hatred , and Manhunt 2 can’t be aired.

It seem like distressing news, but it’s not. Really, some people may be upset that Twitch isn’t offering the same level as freedom as before. That’s understandable. But it’s a smart idea for the company for a number of reasons, and doesn’t mean people are locked out of seeing these games completely.

What we have to understand that Twitch is a huge entity now. It can’t control who views the streams. If it hadn’t made this move, it could have been liable for all kinds of issues. Kids come across someone playing a hentai game? Parents will get up in arms and protest. Someone unstable could watch a Hatred stream, do something horrific, and Twitch could bear some liability as a result.

Ruling out Adult Only streams is the safest move, especially since it only applies to games that have received an Adult Only rating in every region. You’ll still see a game like, say, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt appear on Twitch. It’s just a few games like Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Director’s Cut, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude Uncut and Uncensored , or Seduce Me wouldn’t make the cut.

And even if you do feel like your life wouldn’t be complete without streams of Adult Only games, it’s important to note that Twitch isn’t the only game in town. It’s the most popular, sure, but there are alternatives. These other services may eventually adopt the same measures, sure. But this is the internet. There are always ways to see what you want.

Not to mention, and this is an absolutely crazy idea, but someone who really wants to watch these Adult Only rated games could do something like buy said games. If you’re someone who would watch the stream, then you’d ideally be of an age where you could legally purchase them. Buy the game you wanted to watch, enjoy it yourself, and skip the middleman.

Twitch can do what it wants. If the company feels Adult Only games are something it won’t associate itself with, that’s fine. There are other resources and it is doing what is best for the brand. Besides, it’s not like there even are that many Adults Only games. If something you want to see can’t be viewed anymore, then head to your favorite search engine or, well, go play the game.
