Sony Should’ve Skipped the 1TB PS4 and Jumped Straight to 2TB

Sony Should’ve Skipped the 1TB PS4 and Jumped Straight to 2TB

The leadup to E3 always brings with it unintentional reveals. One of which is a new variation on the PS4. FCC documents suggest Sony is putting together two new models, another 500GB CUH-1215A, and a 1TB CUH-1215B. This means we might finally get a PS4 with the sort of hard drive we need in this day and age. Except, when you think about it, maybe a 1TB PS4 isn’t even enough. If the company is going to go all out, why didn’t it really go for it with a 2TB model instead?

500GB doesn’t really offer you all that much, especially given the popularity of the PlayStation Store and at least two free PlayStation Plus games per month for the system. I had to start making the difficult decisions to free up extra room at the eight month mark. A 1TB PS4 will help, but given the proliferation of digital content, it feels like a temporary measure. How much time will that buy you? A year, perhaps. A 2TB HDD would have been more forgiving.

I mean, it isn’t as though memory is ridiculously expensive. Yes, 3.5″ hard drives are less expensive than the 2.5″ someone needs for a PS4, but it isn’t uncommon to find deals on either kind. Sony giving us a larger stock option off of the bat would be appreciated, and I’m sure people would be more than willing to invest the extra money if they knew it meant they would be set for space for two, maybe even three years. That’s what a 2TB PS4 could have done.

Because honestly, the prospect of changing out a hard drive on your own is a little daunting. We all know how easy it is with a PS4. Pop the lid and the 500GB hard drive is right there. You could be done in 15 minutes. But there’s always this worry about whether you’re doing it right. Or maybe that’s just me. I prefer to think I’m not alone in that unsubstantiated fear, though, due to the 1TB PS4’s potential existence. Larger stock hard drives mean not having to deal with that, and taking an even bigger step of a 2TB HDD would have alleviated concerns for a good long while.

I mean, it’s going to happen eventually. I’m fairly certain of it, and can’t be the only one. If we end up getting a 1TB PS4 option in time for the console’s second birthday, and Sony shoots for a 10 year life cycle, then it stands to reason a 2TB model could appear by year four or five. It would have made more sense to go ahead and opt for it now, instead of making people wait. I’m sure people would have purchased it.

The 1TB PS4 seems like a sure thing, and is definitely a step in the right direction. More space is always better this generation. Yet, one can’t help but wonder if Sony could, and should, have pushed it a little more. A 2TB PS4 would have been even sweeter, would definitely have sold, and surely have been appreciated. It probably all came down to money, as it usually does, and perhaps we’ll eventually see the bigger, better PS4 in a few years.
