The Final Fantasy VII PC to PS4 Port should be Cancelled

The Final Fantasy VII PC to PS4 Port should be Cancelled

Final Fantasy VII is coming to the PS4! It’s news we already know. Square Enix brought it up during the 2014 PlayStation Experience to the stunned silence of fan disappointment. The company would port the PC version of the game to the PS4, despite the fact that a PSOne Classic iteration has been available for years, should anyone with a Sony console so crave the opportunity to venture into Midgar with AVALANCHE again. But hey, Square Enix likes money, so what’re you going to do?

Well, now that the Final Fantasy VII remake that everybody actually wanted is on the way to the system, cancel the one that’s already been on multiple consoles and made available via the PlayStation Store. That seems like a pretty smart plan. At least, it does to me. Because who really needs more than one?

Sure, there may be some purists who would prefer the more traditional port of Final Fantasy VII , especially since the newly announced version is absolutely a remake, which means new content and tweaks to the existing formula. Someone may want that return to a simpler time. That’s fine. But do you really think they’ll want that for $15.99?

Because that’s what it will cost them during the 2015 holiday season. Four dollars more than the PC version, and about six dollars more than the PSOne Classic release. For something that is, for all intents and purposes, the exact same game. It’s a pointless waste of money.

Square Enix should go ahead and declare the initial porting endeavor an elaborate tease. Ha ha! We announced Final Fantasy VII at the first PlayStation Experience! But now, about half a year later, we decided to show that we really are doing exactly what you asked and remaking Final Fantasy VII . Let’s get this out of your way.

The Final Fantasy VII PC to PS4 Port should be Cancelled

And sure, it could be argued that some people will want the original Final Fantasy VII even more, now that the remake is coming. I understand that. But, as I said earlier, there’s a fiscal issue to consider. Who would grab a PS4 version when the PC version regularly drops to $5.99 during Steam sales, and the PS3/Vita/PSP version is easily accessible? If somebody wants it, they already have it, and a PS4 version with trophies isn’t going to magically be more appealing.

Square Enix should go against its very nature, which is porting every game to every possible platform in the pursuit of profit, and take the high road this time. It should cancel the PC to PS4 port of Final Fantasy VII . It comes across as exploitative, and it’s confusing for fans looking for information about the remake.
