Why Comic Con 2015 Appeals To Gamers and Geeks Alike

Why Comic Con 2015 Appeals To Gamers and Geeks Alike

Here’s the thing. I’m old. Not super old. I mean, 32 is still pretty young, all things considered. But to all of you, that’s probably getting up there. Why I am telling you all this? So you know when I tell you things have changed, you know I’m telling the truth. Comic conventions weren’t always major news. I know, you hear about things like the San Diego Comic Con and even events like Anime Central in newspapers and on TV, but that wasn’t always the case. It’s only recently that events like SDCC have become an event for all to enjoy, not just people involved in very particular fandoms.

It’s reassuring, because it means that something like SDCC 2015 isn’t an event for a small group of people. I mean, over 100,000 people attend each year. They travel to come to this event. It’s a reassuring sign that such events, and pastimes, are mainstream. We aren’t niche anymore. These cons are for everyone.

Everyone seems to realize it, and it’s almost as though SDCC became a major event in general, rather than only in the realm of geekdom, overnight. Major figures in entertainment, people who direct, write, and star in productions, don’t show up out of obligation to hype movies. These people roam the show floors for fun. One of the best examples is Bryan Cranston, who went undercover in a Walter White mask to wander SDCC 2013 outside of the Breaking Bad panel he attended. People are more willing to embrace their love of all sorts of media and show it.

It’s quite a big deal. Unless you were among people you knew shared your interests, it wasn’t “cool” to tell people you were going to a comic convention. But now, people revel in the event. Celebrities’ embracing of things like SDCC 2015 have made it acceptable for everyone to be excited about it.

Of course, it helps that such places have become major hubs for announcements across all forms of media. Comic cons haven’t only been about comics for years now. The names bely the true contents. Anything that inspires people and is even remotely rooted in science fiction or fantasy seems to be fair game. Companies realize that, and have made it a platform to get even more people excited.

Why Comic Con 2015 Appeals To Gamers and Geeks Alike

Take the realm of gaming. There are things that will be at SDCC 2015 that weren’t at E3 2015. Two examples are the Mewtwo amiibo and playable demo of the PC version of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD . The release of a Doctor Who Lego Dimensions trailer counts too. The hype is real.

All of this comes together to create an event that can’t be shoved aside or put in a box because it’s only geeky or nerdy. Comic conventions have burst out of their shells. SDCC 2015 is a major event for everyone, not small subsets of people who care about incredibly specific things. And that’s a wonderful thing.
