The PS4 Could Be Home to the Best Street Fighter Ever

The PS4 Could Be Home to the Best Street Fighter Ever

The PS4 may be home to one of the greatest Street Fighter games ever made, if we can believe Capcom’s huge info dump from last weekend’s EVO fighting game championships.

The first big news was the announcement of Necali. Necali is a character loosely based on Maori warriors of New Zealand. He has a savage, almost animalistic fighting style, making use of ground pounds, claw swipes, and a variety of quick close ranged command grabs. When he activates his V-Trigger he practically goes Super Saiyan, his bundled up dreadlocked hair exploding into firey wisps, and the scars on his body glowing. At this point he gains access to a variety of new moves including a low hitting stomp, a rising claw DP, and even a new super. Check him out in the trailer below.

The second big news is that we finally know how big the Street Fighter V roster is going to be. It will include 16 characters to start, with 4 of them being entirely original characters. If this is the case, and all the leaks we heard are true, then the roster is almost completely full. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Birdie, Charlie/Nash, Cammy, and Necali are all already confirmed, and supposedly Alex, Urien, Karin, and R. Mika will be joining them. That’s 11 characters already, with room for 2 more returners and 3 more new characters. If this roster is true, has your favorite character made the cut?

Capcom also made three very big promises at EVO 2015 this year, regarding DLC, unlockable characters, and system balance patches. First, the only release you will ever have to own is the original Street Fighter V . There will be no super or ultra versions and you will never have to purchase the same game again. Second, all balance patches, adjustments, and new modes like Ultra’s Omega mode, will be available for free. No one will have to pay for a balance patch. Finally, all post launch gameplay related content (yes, this includes DLC) will be earnable for free by playing the game. Yes, every single DLC character will also be an unlockable character, bringing back the days of character unlocks. Note that you may have to learn how to play the game at a high level to do so. That being said, all new character DLC will be able to be purchased individually, so if there is one character you are just having a hard time unlocking, you can buy it and unlock the rest.

Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, EVO had a celebrity guest this year. Jamie Lee Curtis and her entire family took a trip to the fighting game championships, and they all cosplayed. Curtis herself went as Vega, hiding her face behind a mask the whole time. I wonder if her favorite character made the cut for Street Fighter V ?

The PS4 Could Be Home to the Best Street Fighter Ever

Street Fighter V is shaping up to be the fighting game event of next year. With the PS4 looking to be the console of choice for fighting gamers, the big question is whether the Xbox One can compete. The Xbox One has Killer Instinct , but that had a much smaller tournament at EVO this year than the Street Fighter crowd did, and it’s very unlikely that anyone will knock Street Fighter off of its throne. Not to mention that multi-platform games like Mortal Kombat X are also generally played on the PlayStation 4, and Japanese “anime” style fighting games are also PlayStation 4 exclusive. It looks like the PS4 has the entire fighting game community locked up.
