The Nintendo NX Is Nothing More Than a Fantasy…For Now

The Nintendo NX Is Nothing More Than a Fantasy…For Now

You may have seen the enthusiastic headlines that appeared earlier this week.  ” Dragon Quest games confirmed for Nintendo NX!”

You may also have noticed that those headlines didn’t appear here at Cheat Code, because many of us are jaded veterans of the broken game of Telephone that is news coverage of the Japanese game industry. We were right to be skeptical, because Square Enix has absolutely not confirmed any games, Dragon Quest or otherwise, for the Nintendo NX. The most the company will do is say that it will “consider” bringing Dragon Quest XI to the next Nintendo home console, presumably depending on the console’s specs and form factor.

If Square Enix knows anything about the Nintendo NX, which it may or may not, it’s certainly not allowed to say so. We have no idea what Nintendo even knows about its next console, much less what third party publishers know about it. Heck, when Nintendo’s next CEO takes over, that person might even decide to change the NX’s direction, though company tradition and Japanese business culture suggest that probably won’t happen in a big way.

We all know that the Wii U has been a huge sales flop, so everybody wants to move on and talk about the next thing, even though it’s not coming for some time yet. I’ve seen all sorts of rumors about the NX.  Maybe it will be a console-handheld hybrid!  Maybe it’s a fake and Nintendo doesn’t want to admit that it’s getting out of the home console biz!  Maybe it’ll be a return to the Wiimote waggling that brought Nintendo so much sales success last gen!  None of these ideas can be confirmed in any way, because nobody knows anything about the NX except Nintendo’s best insiders, and they can’t say anything or they get fed to the Goombas.  Few video game companies are as good at keeping things under wraps as Nintendo.

The Nintendo NX Is Nothing More Than a Fantasy…For Now

I know, I know, everybody wants to talk about the Nintendo NX. Nintendo fans are hoping it’ll be something awesome that will make all their Nintendreams come true. Nintendo haters just want to see if it’ll be named something stupid like the WiiThree so they can point and laugh.  The thing is, it’s just pointless to speculate and spread rumors at this point. Nintendo is notoriously difficult to predict. The NX is currently the code name for an upcoming console that might as well be a big fluffy cloud in the sky for all we know.

Instead of talking in circles and chasing rumors about the NX, we should take some time to enjoy the Wii U.  It actually has a pretty darn good library going these days, especially if you haven’t bought one yet. Its releases may have been few and far-between, but most of them are excellent games, and there will be more to come.  The NX won’t even be announced until next year at the earliest, and who knows how long it will be between announcement and release? Once we have some actual solid information, we’ll be sure to see a million editorials about how it’s Nintendo’s savior/certain doom. Until then, if you’ve got to sigh longingly for an upcoming product from Nintendo, do it for the Wii U’s upcoming Zelda game. At least we’ve got last year’s E3 trailer to go on with that game.
