Trolls Are Gonna Be Pissed About This Game

Trolls Are Gonna Be Pissed About This Game

So the Final Fantasy VII remake is on the way, and there will be changes – drastic changes, according to Square Enix. Recently the company revealed its plans to overhaul to the combat, and we already know the writers will update the story. From the way development is progressing, Square Enix seems like it’s making a totally different Final Fantasy VII .

What won’t be different? People on the Internet will continue arguing about how overrated or not the game is. As a fan of the original Final Fantasy VII , I’m not sure how well I’ll enjoy or appreciate the changes, but I have a fairly good idea of how the internet’s reaction will play out.

Once the remake is further along in development, Square Enix will reveal more details and assets. Everyone will lose their shit, especially about the combat. One camp will argue that the original turn-based system strikes a perfect balance between simple and complex, and that the remake will totally mess it up. Others will argue that the original’s combat is archaic and deters new consumers from getting into JRPGs. Everyone will fight. Then people will notice the redesigned characters. Trolls will joke that Cloud looks more like a girl than ever and continue making fun of Tetsuya Nomura’s penchant for zippers. Maybe a troll with a better sense of humor will joke about how much he or she misses the Popeye the Sailor Man arms the original characters had. This troll is the best kind of troll.

Shortly before journalists receive their review copies and attempt to play through the game as quickly as they can to meet embargo, trolls will take to Metacritic and give us their well-informed opinions. Some will rank the game a 10 out of 10, contriving highlights from their own imagination of the perfect remake that could never possibly live up to expectations. Others, the ones who already hated Final Fantasy VII , will tip the scale to the other side, citing the same issues they had with the original, only claiming they’re worse. Me, I’m hoping there will be some trolls with a sense of humor who preemptively rate the game at a 7; regardless, many will make up their minds about the game before it’s even out.

There’s a phenomenon I’ve noticed where after a critically adored game (remember Skyrim ? ) is released and everyone has had a chance to play it, people begin to claim how overrated it is. The Final Fantasy VII remake will not escape this fate. The critics will publish their reviews, and most of them will be high – very high, probably. Everyone, critics and players alike, will enjoy the high they have over playing the long-awaited remake, but, as with most games, everyone will soon become more critical of it. Podcasters will discuss the game’s flaws a bit more in-depth. YouTubers will post their reviews; some of them will present analytical, thoughtful critiques, while others will upload one-sided arguments about how bad the remake is is. The latter will be nitpicky and angry, because anger is the most funny emotion on the Internet.

By then, enough fuel will have been added to the fire for trolls to wreak havoc. All they have to do is pick a forum, mention the Final Fantasy VII remake, and then sit back and watch as everyone flings their opinions at each other as if they’re using slings to throw rocks. You may notice that this doesn’t sound different from most arguments about Final Fantasy VII today, and that’s because as long as Final Fantasy VII –  original or remake – continues to have such a legacy, then we’ll be stuck in a cycle where fans, detractors, and trolls will continue to argue a pointless argument.
