You’ll Be Shocked They’re Remaking This Classic!

Picture this. It’s a dark and desolate office manned by a skeleton crew. Profits are falling. Franchises are crumbling. Sirens are blaring. One person manages to crawl to a glass case and break it with a hammer. Inside is an envelope with a single message on it.

“In case of emergency, remake Resident Evil 2

This is what I imagine the scene was like at Capcom when they decided to pitch the idea of remaking probably the best of the Resident Evil franchise. I wouldn’t blame them, Square-Enix did the same thing with Final Fantasy VII .

So Capcom asked fans if they wanted to see a Resident Evil 2 remake, and everyone said yes, obviously, as we are all dying to play some of our favorite games of the past in HD. But is this a good idea? Will it help the Resident Evil franchise?

Let’s take a look at the problems that have been plaguing the Resident Evil franchise for the past few years. Most notably, people keep saying that the franchise isn’t scary anymore. Instead, it’s become a Michael Bay style action series, primarily focusing on explosions and secondarily focusing on zombies.

So if Resident Evil 2 is updated for modern day systems, do you really think it’s going to remain scary? The same teams that have been making Resident Evil an action fest will be working on the remake. Do you really think it will capture the wonder that the original did?

Another common complaint is that all Resident Evil plots are the same. In Resident Evil 6 , Helena tells Leon to follow her, there’s no time to explain, and he wouldn’t believe what she was going to show her. Do you know what he showed her? An underground lab that was making zombies. That’s the same thing that’s happened in every other Resident Evil game!

Wouldn’t it be nice if they changed up the plot a bit? Instead of “evil corporation makes zombies,” maybe set a Resident Evil after the zombie apocalypse already began, in a more Walking Dead style scenario? Maybe, instead of doing prequel after prequel and sending us through underground lab after underground lab, change up the setting a bit. The whole “massive conspiracy ends up making zombies” thing is wearing a little thin after so many years.

Let’s face it. Resident Evil 2 is being remade because Capcom doesn’t have any ideas for the franchise anymore. That bodes ill for the remake. If a studio cannot be innovative, then they probably don’t understand what made older games fun to play either. Instead, they are just using Resident Evil 2 as a floatation device on a rapidly sinking boat.

If you want a decent Resident Evil game, go play The Evil Within . While it still has its flaws, it’s far closer to what we loved about Resident Evil than any recently-made Capcom game.
