The Secret to Great Multiplayer Found!

The Secret to Great Multiplayer Found!

Have you had a chance to try the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition ? Whether you have or haven’t, you’re in for a surprise. Brace yourself, because this might shock you. The online multiplayer in the game actually works at launch.

Isn’t that crazy? Did you have to go back and read that a few times to be sure I didn’t mess something up? I assure you, it’s true. The Coalition did something right when it worked on the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition . If someone loads up the game and heads into multiplayer, they’ll actually find matches. It won’t be a laggy, broken mess.

It’s weird that something like this should come as such a shock. Celebrating a game like Gears of War: Ultimate Edition working at launch shouldn’t be something that needs to be done. We should all automatically assume everything would naturally be all right. But we don’t live in that kind of gaming world.

The Halo: The Master Chief Collection proves that. The November 11, 2014 release still had problems with its online multiplayer as late as June 2015. Microsoft had to cancel its own tournament, because the game didn’t work. Things have mostly been ironed out now, but seven months with a game not working properly is unacceptable.

Even Street Fighter V ‘s beta touches on these issues. Yes, beta tests are designed to seek out problems. But the fact that one couldn’t even work for a single day during the first beta attempt was disheartening. It shows Capcom underestimated demand even for a controlled event. Hopefully, it also means a lesson was learned.

But for now, at least we have one game that’s gotten things right. Your opinion on the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition may vary, depending on your love for the series, but there’s one thing about it that’s undeniably good. Microsoft and The Coalition put together a game you can enjoy with friends and strangers at launch, and it’s great.
