Did Nintendo Just Rip-Off Their Fans?

Did Nintendo Just Rip-Off Their Fans?

There’s a bit of a debate going on among Super Mario fans, and it has to do with Super Mario Maker . No, it isn’t a discussion about the best sorts of levels, debates about DLC, or diatribes about what is or isn’t there. Rather, it’s about the value of the game.

For many, Super Mario Maker is a system seller. Nintendo released a bundle that includes it for Walmart. Some are considering this and Splatoon the tipping point. But at the same time, there are people asking if $60 is the right price for a game such as this. While there are 100 included levels created by Nintendo, it isn’t as though those 100 are all as long and full fledged as ones appearing in the original games. People have been asking if it’s worth it for something to create levels. I’d say the answer is yes.

It’s easy to understand why people would think Super Mario Maker isn’t worth the money. If you aren’t creative, the editor holds no appeal. You’re limited to a little over 130 created or downloaded levels saved to the system. It’s essentially a title where people rely on the community’s creativity for amusement.

But it’s that same communal nature that assures us of Super Mario Maker ‘s worth. This is a game that will keep giving. So long as people out there are creative, there will be things to play. If Nintendo chooses to support it with DLC, it will never stagnate due to a continually growing wealth of additional editor elements. Even if what’s on the disc is all there will ever be, people are only going to grow more adept at using these tools as time goes by, resulting in improved content.

This is a game that has already inspired two subreddits . Super Mario Maker has gotten people sharing. Plus, it’s nature means that those who have purchased will always keep coming back. It’s amazing the variety that can stem from the palette of tools Nintendo has given. People will always be thinking of things, and new offerings will flow forth for weeks, months, and maybe even years. After all, people still make new levels for LittleBigPlanet 3 and 4 .

Super Mario Maker is an important game for the Wii U. It allows people to make their own Super Mario levels for the first time, while also providing a reason for people to use or buy the console. The inherent value of the game itself, however, will vary from player to play. I believe it’s worth the $60 price tag, even if it isn’t exactly what everyone expected. Those who think otherwise are entitled to that opinion too, though they might change their minds after they play.
