Clancraft: A Guide to Halo 5 Multiplayer Success

Clancraft: A Guide to Halo 5 Multiplayer Success

Halo 5 ’s Warzone game type is going to change everything next month. This will hands-down be the definitive proving ground for competing clans to show what they’re made of and how well they work together. Any group of ragtag, trigger-happy frat bros can start a clan and dominate a few team-slayer matches on the weekends, but Warzone is going to draw the tacticians and the masterminds; it will reward the teams that can operate in unison, each member complimenting and fortifying the strengths of the others. Any competitive player knows that establishing and maintaining a balanced clan can turn into a frustrating, full-time management gig.

In order to save you some headaches I’m here to offer you some advice from business school that is incredibly useful in this context, and it might sound counterintuitive. You ready? Stop looking for an entire team of well-rounded players.  You don’t need twelve Spartans who can do everything pretty well, you need specialists. Usually these are the people who are looked down upon in a traditional clan structure because they tend to act and make decisions individually. Here are the three most common lone-wolf clan members, and how you should utilize them in your Warzone strategy.

The friend who only plays the campaign:

Your buddy is like the AI whisperer: in no time at all he’s able to adapt to the attack patterns of any Covenant or Promethean foe. In slayer game types he consistently has an abysmal K/D ratio, but he’s the only one in your clan who can breeze through the campaign on legendary. Assign this man a commanding position and put him in charge of a squad of four Spartans. He’s the one you want leading the mission to bring down some Covenant bosses for big points.

The Run ’n’ Gunner:

Every clan has one. This guy or gal will be with you every step of the way as you plan and strategize. They understand their role plainly and feel the weight of expectation to hold a particular base or support another key player, but once the match starts, none of that means a thing. The moment the clinks and ticks of grenades puncture the stillness and red dots flood the mini-map something snaps. Their pupils dilate and they totally Hulk out, never willing to halt or concede death until every magazine of ammunition has been exhausted, every grenade has been thrown, and everything within reach of the butt of their rifle has been meleed. This is your agent of chaos. Hammer your objectives into them before the match and then let them loose; when you’re about to drop an elite Covenant target and you get word that the opposing team has control of all three bases, your wild thing that you haven’t heard from in minutes will be the one that shows up out of nowhere with a rocket launcher, snagging a multi-kill and saving your ass.

The Freak Sniper:

This is the person who feels naked with an assault rifle in their hands. They can masterfully wield anything with a scope, no matter how distant or close their target may be. How do they always get head shots? It’s like they plant rare earth magnets into the helmets of their enemies and the end of their sniper rifle’s barrel. If you’re lucky enough to have the head-shot-homie in your clan, there are two important roles for them in Warzone: base defense and scouting. No doubt many if not most teams are going to focus solely on capturing all three bases and destroying an enemy’s base core. If your clan isn’t as PVP focused and decides to implement another strategy, you’ll need at least one base cleverly guarded. Keep your sniper hidden where he can provide vital backup to the small defensive team you leave behind in your home base. Otherwise have him scout out enemy locations; if he notices that ten out of twelve opponents are fighting covenant or piloting wandering vehicles, it might be a good time to call an all-out push to occupy bases.

Let me know if I left out an obvious lone-wolf agent, and fill us in on how he or she fits into your Warzone strategy.
