Everyone’s wondering what’s to come from the latest PlayStation 4 rumor. Have you heard it? Allegedly, supposedly, apparently Sony is working on a PlayStation 4.5. This improved version of the system would have one notable change. There’d be an improved GPU, one which would allow for 4K resolution support and a higher level of quality when running PlayStation VR games.
Granted, this is all hearsay at the moment. There’s no word from on high confirming it. Still, people are getting all worried about Sony possibly releasing a PlayStation 4.5 update. Which is crazy, because this sort of thing wouldn’t be a big deal. Honestly, it would only help, not hurt, people.
This alleged PlayStation 4 model seems designed with virtual reality in mind. All of the information presented so far says there wouldn’t be any exclusive games. It’d be more for making sure people who have the sort of setup that would make PlayStation VR or 4K viewing possible can better enjoy their gaming experience. It’d be an option update, naturally more expensive, but only for people who really need that function.
Plus, it wouldn’t stop people who have an ordinary PlayStation VR from using the headset with their existing PlayStation 4. A hypothetical PlayStation 4.5 would probably make the experience better for those who chose to get it. As someone who has played games on a standard PlayStation 4 with a PlayStation VR, I can confirm that it worked wonderfully. It was a smooth, enjoyable experience, and that was even with preliminary hardware. The consumer build will likely be even better.
Besides, other companies have done this. Nintendo, most recently. It released a New Nintendo 3DS, which is coexisting quite nicely alongside the standard 3DS and 2DS models. People who want the better gameplay can choose to get it, but there are very few exclusive games that people who don’t upgrade miss. In fact, it’s only Xenoblade Chronicles 3D , Hyrule Warriors Legends (we all know you need a N3DS to play that game properly), and the SNES Virtual Console library that are blocked off. This hypothetical PlayStation 4.5 would be a similar creature.
We shouldn’t be knocking a system that could be a viable option for people who are going to invest in a PlayStation VR setup and want something that cater to that. While all the information is shrouded in mystery at the moment, every indication seems to suggest a PlayStation 4.5 wouldn’t have any exclusives or threaten the existing PlayStation 4 owners’ lifestyles. Rather than worrying about what one could mean, we should be excited that Sony is the sort of company that would think ahead and consider a version of the system that makes the future of virtual reality brighter.
