And the Best Shooter of 2016 Is…

…a title released in 2015!

I’ve done a lot of writing recently about Paragon, Battleborn, and Overwatch . The internet is doing a whole lot of talking about Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 . The fact remains, though, that there’s only one class-based shooter (hell, I can even call it a hero shooter) that will be dominating consoles and PCs this summer, and that’s Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege . This game came out last December, and I had a good feeling that Ubisoft was on to something really special. My gut was right, and this game continues to age like the finest wine.

If you’ve never played Rainbow Six Siege because you heard bad things after launch about the netcode and bugs, you really need to give this a shot. The game goes on sale quite regularly, and you should know that everything that made it so amazing when it was new has been honed and improved, while all of the game-breaking issues have long since been dealt with. Don’t get me wrong, you’re still going to experience the occasional hiccup or disconnect, but that’s true in any online game. The Siege community is just a little more sensitive to these issues, and more vocal about them, because we had to deal with almost three months of broken madness post-launch.

But now – bloody hell – now there’s simply nothing else out there capable of giving you the rush and heart-pounding thrills that the more competitive among you crave. With every update Ubisoft makes it easier for you and your friends to work together, and with each new season new operators and locations force you to rethink your entire strategy for every single match; something you should be doing anyway, if you hope to succeed.

And the Best Shooter of 2016 Is…

Operation Dust Line , the new, second season update, has brought with it the most beautiful, polished, consistent, and exciting version of the game we’ve ever played. Ubisoft Montreal cares deeply about this game and if you need proof of that all you have to do is go look at the history of patch notes. The community is very involved in the game’s improvement, and the game I’m playing now is so much more refined than the game I was playing in December. Everything I mentioned is true – the graphics really have been overhauled, details and UI have been touched up and improved, new features are constantly being added (like the ability to customize weapon loadouts in between rounds, for example), and new operators with interesting weapons and gadgets really have made this game more exciting than it’s ever been.

I was deeply impressed by Overwatch , and I plan on picking it up, but there can only be one best FPS of the year, you know? There’s no doubt about it, Rainbow Six Siege is still the king, and if the past few updates are any indication of the trajectory that this game is on you can expect it to get better and better. Do yourselves a favor and play a few matches – you may just find yourself, with trembling hands and blood running hot, navigating your way to the season pass checkout after your first night.
