Thanks for Ripping Us Off Battleborn!

Thanks for Ripping Us Off Battleborn!

I have bad news for anyone who immediately bought Battleborn . You’ve been ripped off. Amazon , Best Buy , GameStop , and Walmart are now selling the formerly $59.99 game for $39.99. The price dropped the second Overwatch , Battleborn’ s biggest competitor, came out. Now, we’re left wondering if this is a game people should have bothered with.

Really, immediately discounting Battleborn makes both Gearbox and the game seem weak. It’s like the company and retailers are already suggesting that this is the lesser of two products. Why else would they cave on cost so quickly? It reeks of desperation, as if a lower price is the only thing that could possibly make Battleborn attractive. It feels like the money people panicked.

That is going to make people question Battleborn’ s quality. It is a game that absolutely has its merits. I prefer Overwatch, but there’s value in both titles. They have their own distinctions. But when one game starts out at $60, then drops so abruptly, you have to wonder. Battleborn isn’t even a month old. It came out May 3. Yet here it is, knocked down $20. Even the digital deluxe edition has $20 taken off of the price. It shows something isn’t right.

Even if it isn’t a sign of weakness, the abrupt alteration is absolutely discourteous. How do you think that makes people who were day one adopters feel? It’s like Gearbox and these retailers ripped them off; like they threw $20 away. You can’t even argue that the amount of time you spent playing it so far makes it okay, because you barely had three full weeks with it.

It certainly isn’t going to help sales. Look at what the sudden Battleborn price drop did. It got people talking, but not in a good way. The game went from $60 to $40 in less than a month. What if it happens again? What if Overwatch gets some free DLC characters or an expansion announced at E3 2016? Will Battleborn’ s price drop another $10? You can’t trust something when it slips so quickly. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Battleborn is a good game. It has some interesting characters and fun activities to enjoy with strangers and friends. It has the misfortune of being out around the time of a more popular and arguably superior game. Now, everyone who backed Battleborn early on is suffering for it. At the very least, Gearbox and the retailers discounting the game are being inconsiderate to early adopters. At worst, we’re left wondering how good the game is and if it’s worth buying.
