Is Microsoft on Crack Regarding Crackdown 3?

A Microsoft representative recently released a rather disappointing statement. Aaron Greenburg, the Xbox Marketing Manager, appeared on the TXR Podcast , and Crackdown 3 came up. The game has been in some sort of limbo, and we’re still not exactly sure when it’s going to be released in. Except, according to Greenburg, it’s fine if it doesn’t make it into 2016. He even went as far as to say the company and console didn’t need Crackdown 3 to be part of its 2016 lineup.

Except yeah, Microsoft and the Xbox One both kind of do need Crackdown 3 to be released. Especially this year. It’s already been established that the Xbox One isn’t selling as well as the PlayStation 4. The last estimates for the figures came from EA , which earlier this year estimated about 55 million consoles in the wild, about 35 million of which were PlayStation 4s, which meant about 20 million would have to be Xbox Ones. It isn’t selling as badly as, say, the Wii U, but it is a console in dire need of a boost and exclusives.

Which are something the Xbox One isn’t going to get much of in 2016. This year it will get the Killer instinct Definitive Edition , ReCore, Forza Horizon 3, and Gears of War 4. That’s it. Those are the Xbox One’s only exclusive games. None of them are bad titles, per say. In fact, I played two of them at E3 2016 and greatly enjoyed them. But, to compare, the PlayStation 4 will be getting Gal Gun, Fairy Fencer F, No Man’s Sky, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X HD, Psycho-Pass, Dragon Quest Builders, Exist Archive, World of Final Fantasy, The Last Guardian, and Gran Turismo Sport, to name a few. It has fewer first party exclusives, but more third parties are making games just for the PS4, as opposed to for the Xbox One.

It’s especially important too, because Crackdown 3 isn’t the only game that’s slipped out of 2016. It’s joined by Halo Wars 2 and Scalebound, two other important exclusives. If one game gets delayed once, that’s fine. But when multiple games are suddenly out of the picture, it can be cause for concern. It makes you wonder if something could be wrong. Is something wrong with Crackdown 3 ? Microsoft isn’t saying anything, so who knows?

Is Microsoft on Crack Regarding Crackdown 3?

What we do know is that Microsoft needs a system seller this year. The Xbox One S is being released on August 2. It’s a slimmer, updated version of the Xbox One. While the real Xbox One update, Project Scorpio, isn’t coming until next year, Microsoft needs a reason for this other Xbox One to sell now. Do you really think Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, and ReCore will do it on their own? I don’t. I think it needs a bigger name to go with it, and hey, wasn’t Crackdown 3’ s original release estimate summer 2016? It makes you think.

Microsoft can try and put up a brave front. It can pretend it didn’t need Crackdown 3 now more than ever. But we can look at the system and its library and know the truth. The Xbox One is in need of exclusives and system sellers. Crackdown 3 would have been an incredible means of moving the Xbox One S, and systems in general. It’s a shame we aren’t getting clear answers concerning its development and only see bravado instead. Maybe as the actual release date draws nearer, we’ll learn the truth. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late for the Xbox One.
