Why You Don’t Deserve a No Man’s Sky Refund

Why You Don’t Deserve a No Man’s Sky Refund

No Man’s Sky has been quite the hot topic since its launch. Some people are satisfied with the exploration game, despite some claims of false advertising and promises. Others aren’t, because there are a lot of elements Hello Games promised that aren’t in the game. Those who aren’t happy are complaining, and the results are leading stores like Amazon, Sony, and Steam to issue refunds on request, even if the people asking for them have been playing for upwards of 50 hours.

It’s great that we have that option. Refunds are a recourse option we should enjoy. But, there’s also a morality question in play. Even if we can get refunds, do we necessarily deserve them? Should we always be asking for them whenever possible?

No Man’s Sky is the poster child for this question. As I’ve mentioned, people discovered that going to Amazon if they purchased a physical copy there and Sony or Steam if they went digital, is getting them refunds. The number of hours played and being outside the return window doesn’t matter with the digital distributors, provided someone goes to a support representative and cordially explains the situation. The same goes for Amazon. But, should you really be asking if you’ve owned and been playing the game since launch? Especially if you’ve spent over 20 hours with No Man’s Sky ? No. You shouldn’t.

Asking for a No Man’s Sky refund after spending enough time with the game to explore multiple solar systems and make good headway toward reaching the center of the universe is wrong. It’s having your cake and eating it too. This is the sort of game where if Hello Games did wrong you, you know within the first 10 or 15 hours. It doesn’t just “come” to you 50 or 75 hours later. Requesting a refund at that point is going to seem disingenuous and run the risk of ruining the system so we “can’t” get refunds when we really need and deserve it.

Why You Don’t Deserve a No Man’s Sky Refund

It’s a bit like everyone dashing in for Pokemon Go refunds after the tracker was removed. Some of the people asking for money back were absolutely right to do so. If you’d just spent money on the game, realize Niantic messed it up, then you should be able to get a refund on that purchase. But, if you were asking for a refund on money that you’d spent on incense and lures back when the game launched, then you’re being petty and cashing in without a good reason.

Just because you can get a refund doesn’t mean you should. You need to think about the circumstances surrounding your playtime. If you went and spent over 50 hours with No Man’s Sky , it’s difficult to suddenly claim you deserve all of your money back. You wouldn’t have spent the equivalent of two days with the game if it was really that bad, and that sort of investment suggests the problems that were there obviously didn’t deter you. If you just picked it up and aren’t happy or spent under 15 hours with it, then you have a much better claim. Think before you start trying to get your money back. Don’t do it because everyone else is.
