Why Sony Should Just Let The Uncharted Movie Die

Why Sony Should Just Let The Uncharted Movie Die

Listen, there are times when you have to admit defeat. Odds can stack against you. Life’s unfair. You could feel like you have a golden ticket, only to take a closer and find it’s really yellow aluminum foil. The dignified thing to do is pack it in, graciously bow out, and search for a better fight. Which is what Sony should definitely do regarding the Uncharted movie, because this thing is dead in the water.

It seems like this Uncharted movie is cursed. If something can go wrong with it, it is going wrong. Avi Arad began working with Sony to produce and create it back in 2008. It’s eight years later, and there’s not much to show for it. Well, let’s be more specific. There’s nothing positive to show for it. Let’s review all the reasons why a time of death needs to be called on this thing.

First, there have been too many scripts for the Uncharted movie. Too many cooks were in this kitchen. It started with David O. Russell ( Three Kings, American Hustle ) penning it, but he dropped out. Cormac and Marianne Wibberley ( National Treasure ) stepped in, but also left. In the time since, people like David Guggenheim ( Safe House ), Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer ( Doctor Strange ), and Mark Boal ( The Hurt Locker ) were all on deck to write the story. Now, it’s in the hands of Joe Carnahan ( The Grey, The A-Team ), but who knows how long that will last?

The Uncharted movie is also going through directors at an alarming rate. We started, again, with David O. Russell. When he left, Neil Burger ( The Illusionist, Divergent ) stepped in. Seth Gordon ( Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief ) followed when Burger left, but now he’s gone too. It has no director.

Of course, given all this mess, no actors have been cast. In fact, people offered the role have turned it down. Mark Wahlberg was mentioned back in 2010, but he’s not involved. Chris Pratt was asked to be Nathan Drake, but he turned the role down. People wanted Nathan Fillion or Brett Dalton , but there’s no news there.

Why Sony Should Just Let The Uncharted Movie Die

Sony even removed Uncharted from its release calendar this month. Which only makes sense. I mean, there are no actors, no script, and no director. But still. It losing its 2017 release window shows Sony recognizes there is a problem. Something is absolutely wrong.

Which means it is time to take it one step further. Sony should go ahead and end this farce. The Uncharted movie doesn’t need to happen. We don’t need another bad video game movie. The universe is clearly trying to work against the production. Let’s let it happen. Call it quits. Let’s have Uncharted 4 be the end.
