Did Nintendo Finally Realize Sex Sells?

Did Nintendo Finally Realize Sex Sells?

Have you noticed something about Nintendo’s Switch games lately? Something you didn’t exactly expect to see? Think about the reaction to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , ARMS , and Splatoon 2 over the last few days and weeks. They all have something in common. Take a moment to think about it.

The correct answer is character design. Each of the most recently announced Nintendo games have some superbly designed characters. Female characters, to be exact. It’s like Nintendo has finally realized that having gorgeous gals in their games can only work to their benefit. (And even a few men, too!) People are going crazy over these character designs, proclaiming love for “waifus,” and it is easy to see why. Nintendo is basically bringing sexy back.

This trend began subtly. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced us to what seems like this new direction. Zelda was even more gorgeous than usual, with updated outfits that seemed both more classy and practical than ever before. But it wasn’t just her. Instead of Zelda being the only notable character, we also had Urbosa the Gerudo and Mipha the Zora. All three women are beautiful. They have fantastic color schemes and designs, looking quite alluring. Even the male characters, like Prince Sidon the Zora and Revali the Rito became appealing, both because of their designs and personalities. Which I suppose applies to all of the characters here. Each of them has personalities and amazing bodies, making them more realized characters.

When ARMS came around, we saw Nintendo was still following this trend. Twintelle quickly became an internet sensation. Mainly, because of her assets. She is another character with an incredible design. Her proportions, hairstyle, fighting tendencies, and overall look are all extraordinary. While the characters in this game don’t have personalities that are as well developed, we are able to take away mentalities from her actions after a battle has ended. While she became the sensation, others like Ribbon Girl also garnered acclaim from their design.

And now we have Splatoon 2 . There has always been some buzz about Splatoon characters, as both Callie and Marie garnered quite a bit of love. But now, those idols have been replaced. Marie is present in the story mode, but there’s a whole new duo for the sequel. The second Off the Hook, made up of Pearl the Inkling and Marina the Octoling, were announced, people fell in love. Twitter was swamped with fanart and ravings about Marina, the one people declared the clear winner. And why not? She has an amazing body, wonderful color contrast with the shades of black, white, and green used in her hair and outfit. She has a lovable personality, as she’s dedicated, but also a little bit shy.

It all shows Nintendo is going out of its way to make its characters appeal to fans. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ARMS, and Splatoon 2 all have amazing design. When people see these characters and connect with them, they fall in love with them. All of them have developed these massive followings, because Nintendo is finally willing to take the time to make them look appealing and give them engaging personalities. Their virtual people are sexy!
