What’s Wrong With a Little Mystery?

What’s Wrong With a Little Mystery?

In this day and age, it’s really difficult to keep a secret. Especially when it comes to anything related to the video game industry. There are hundreds of people involved on some of the biggest projects, and they’ve all got their own lives and stresses. Some of them are bound to have a slip happen here and there. Past that, there’s also datamining and other research methods that reveal video game details before they’re announced. It’s not like developers can just write everything down and lock it up in a Password Journal. Someone is bound to find that bright pink sucker and smash it open with a hammer. No, developers have to be secretive and keep things close to the vest, while still living in a modern digital age. It’s difficult, but clearly not impossible.

Bethesda’s Vice President of PR and Marketing, Pete Hines, recently revealed at PAX West that there is another game in the works by the company due to release this year. Bethesda already has a pretty massive line-up of games coming out this year including Skyrim (on the Switch), Wolfenstein 2 , The Evil Within 2 , Quake Champions , Elder Scrolls Legends , and DLC for Elder Scrolls Online / Dishonored . There’s apparently one other game though that they’ve kept entirely secret. Hines mentioned that fans won’t have to wait long to hear about the game, so he didn’t divulge any further details at the time.

Not long after, Hines started to wave his hands around like the wizard from the Wizard of Oz . He took to Twitter to say that fans should ignore what he said. Of course, it’s impossible for fans to ignore a comment like, “Hey, your favorite company is releasing a game you don’t know about.” The internet is on fire right now trying to figure out what this game might be. Some think it’s not a big deal, a few hope it’s a new IP, and others think it’s just another re-release of an old game. No matter what this unannounced project is, it’s highly admirable that Bethesda managed to keep it under wraps for this long.

As I already mentioned, we live in the era of leaks and teasers. Fans of a cult classic puzzle game called Catherine have taken the internet by storm recently after Atlus seemingly teased something related to the game. Could it be a sequel, a reboot ,or remaster? No one knows. But they do know that something Catherine- related is going on behind closed doors at Atlus. In the case of Bethesda, we really don’t know who or what is behind the big curtain. In this digital age of hackers and loose lips, that’s an incredible feat.

What’s Wrong With a Little Mystery?

The mystery of the unknown is not something that exists very often in the video game industry anymore. So I can’t help but commend those who still manage to leave a little intrigue there for their fans. Hines’ attempt at distracting hand-waving on Twitter won’t help him keep fans from trying to figure out what’s going on. However, it does make the whole affair curiouser and curiouser, which has certainly gotten my attention.

Clearly I’m not the only one, as a good amount of people are taking about this little slip of his. We’ll have to twiddle our thumbs in the darkness for a while longer before Bethesda reveals the light of whatever they’re working on. I’m all right with taking a journey into the unknown, how about you?
