Fans Will Never Give up on Kingdom Hearts

Fans Will Never Give up on Kingdom Hearts

As far as I’m concerned, the video game industry and its surrounding community includes the best kinds of people that humanity can offer. Video game fans are some of the most creative individuals on the planet. They’re often highly intelligent. Gamers can be very selfless and kind. They’re also some of the most patient and loyal people I have ever known, and I can prove that last personality trait.

Most of us can probably think of at least one game or franchise that we have been wholly devoted to. One where the developers could do (almost) no wrong. I’m sure you can think of a series that you would wait your whole life for even. Thankfully, we don’t usually have to wait our whole lives, though the wait periods can get really long and drawn out. Take one franchise that is finally going to be updated in an official capacity for the first time in 13 years. For over 13 years, Kingdom Hearts fans have been patiently waiting for Kingdom Hearts III .

I myself dabbled in a few of the extra Kingdom Hearts games, like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days . Nothing would ever compare to an official next iteration in the series though. Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II were literal video game gold to me. Ever since finishing the second entry in the series, my ever-teenaged heart has been looking for my next fix. My loyalty to the series has survived the 13 year wait, and I am just as excited for Kingdom Hearts III now as I was when the credits rolled for the second one.

This feeling isn’t unique to me. There are thousands of Kingdom Hearts fans who have been feeling the same thing. While waiting for the next entry, they’ve been busying themselves with the extra franchise games, like Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ . They’ve surely replayed Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II over and over again. And besides that, Kingdom Hearts fans have probably picked up all kinds of merchandise over the years. Maybe you’ve even gotten a Kingdom Hearts themed tattoo; I’ve certainly seen plenty of those floating around.

No matter what you’ve been doing in the period of over a decade between Kingdom Hearts II and III , my point still remains. You’ve been steadfast in your waiting, as have I. We could have become an angry mob, rabble-rabbled our way to Square Enix headquarters and squatted there until they released Kingdom Hearts III . We didn’t, though. We waited. While we’ve of course become distanced from our past, our hope remained. We clung to every new scrap of information about the series. We cheered every time a new screenshot or video was released while simultaneously sharing it with all of our friends.

Let’s put the video gamer’s patience and loyalty to a metaphorical test. Let’s imagine a high-visibility clothing designer promises to release a brand new line of jackets in a few year’s time. Most fans would probably see a few years as a very reasonable period of time to wait. But let’s say four years have passed. Then seven years, ten years, and even 13 have come and gone! Those same designer’s fans have probably gotten furious over the decade and probably planned to boycott the sale of the jackets when they finally released. Not the gamer though, as these folks remain true to their love.

It’s truly a beautiful thing to behold. While the rest of the world has moved on and plenty of fantastic games have been released since, Kingdom Hearts III still may fill a hole in our hearts. While we could certainly busy ourselves with other games, rather than revisit a series we haven’t played in over a decade, we will happily buy into the title and relive the glory days of our teenage years with Donald, Goofy, and Sora.
