How NOT to Screw Up Pokemon on Switch

The rumor wheels are turning! We know A new Pokemon game is being prepared for the Nintendo Switch by GameFreak. We know it is being described as a real game. There have even been suggestions that it will be out in 2018 or 2019. But, when it comes to actual content, very little has been confirmed. Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda has been tweeting images of Pikachu and Eevee. Eevee has gotten its own Project Eevee account. Most recently, there was an alleged logo for Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu Edition.

With suggestions making it seem as though we could be getting a non-traditional Pokemon game as our first console installment, it has got us thinking what we do not want to see with this game. Let’s go to the mini-list.

We would prefer something that is not a spin-off.

We have heard over and over that this Switch Pokemon game is going to be a “real” Pokemon game. You know, along the lines of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Black, Pokemon Y and Pokemon Sun. To suddenly come along and say, “Guess what? Our new game is Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and combines everything you loved about Hey You, Pikachu! and Pokemon Go!” would be the worst sort of bait and switch. Give us an actual, major game in the Pokemon line.

An entirely new game would be great!

Some of the theories surrounding this new game suggest it could be a Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow update. That hasn’t happened before. Pokemon did celebrate its 20th anniversary recently. And, if this ended up being a game with Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee versions, it could mean it would be like Yellow where one version had Ash starting with Pikachu and the other with Gary and his Eevee. But with this being a whole new opportunity to start fresh on a new system, for the very first console installment, it seems like it would deserve an entirely fresh story, setting, and sense of purpose. Give us a new generation instead of a rehash!

Maybe not repeat Pokemon Sun and Moon’s gimmick?

Pokemon Sun and Moon are enjoyable, well made games. They are fun. We appreciate them and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. But, they also shook up the Pokemon formula by doing way with gyms, offering island challenges and kahunas, and putting in place a different sort of structure. While that was an interesting experiment, maybe the first real Pokemon on the Switch should be a little more reliable and maintain the gym and continent structure present in Pokemon Blue, Silver, Sapphire, Pearl, and Y? Let’s wait before things get too crazy.

Please be Pokemon Bank compatible!

Listen, we’re paying our yearly fees to use the Pokemon Bank with our 3DS installments. We have been diligently storing and transferring our Pokemon, so we can keep our favorites. Since all that data is in the cloud, please make the Pokemon Switch game compatible with it. Let us access our characters from past games and store ones we collect on the Switch. Especially since Nintendo is so backwards about save file backups!

Let us trade without Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions?

Okay. So the page for the Nintendo Switch Online services coming soon makes a point of saying “compatible games” will use its online play option. While I am sure we would all understand if online battling or most interactions fell under that umbrella, maybe leave trading out of it? At least, let us use the Global Trading System or Wonder Trades without paying any fees. Sometimes, you really want to get a version exclusive character without working hard to find it or share some Pokemon with bad IVs, but that are still serviceable, with others. Let us have this, please?
