Please Bring the Mass Effect Trilogy to the PS4 and Xbox One

Please Bring the Mass Effect Trilogy to the PS4 and Xbox One

When it comes to new consoles, ports are pretty much a fact of life. It’s a good way to bolster a new system’s library with a solid game developers and publishers are sure people will love, gives people who didn’t grab it the first time around a chance to actually experience it for the first time, and allows people who have owned and loved the original version to perhaps experience it in a brand new way. Besides, done right, a next-gen port can be a refreshing way to re-experience a game you love in its ultimate incarnation. Which is why we have to hope that Mass Effect trilogy PS4 and Xbox One port happens.

Basically, BioWare’s Aaryn Flynn said on Twitter that the developer has been talking about having the Mass Effect trilogy move on up. For BioWare and EA, it’s probably about building hype for Mass Effect 4 after the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, while also tapping into a source of easy money. But, we shouldn’t let BioWare and EA’s motivations for the first three Mass Effect games leave us jaded, because a next-gen port of the trilogy would be a very good thing.

And no, I’m not just saying that because I want to play the Mass Effect trilogy all over again on my PS4, livestreaming the entire affair. I mean, sure, I want to try and force all my friends to watch the chronicles of my Shepard, and watch with baited breath as they wonder if she will choose Kaidan or Garrus. (Spoiler alert–Mariye Shepard is all about the Turians.) There are plenty of good reasons to ride the Mass Effect trilogy train one last time.

A big one is that a next-gen port of the Mass Effect trilogy would blow our socks off. Imagine how great it would look with high resolution textures, running at 60fps on both the PS4 and Xbox One in 1080p. It would be beautiful, especially since the earlier games did have some texture issues. Then there were video issues… not to mention some audio issues. Which is why a PS4 and Xbox One version would be great. Most ports deal with audio and visual upgrades, and it would be wonderful to play the original three Mass Effect games without wondering whether or not characters would actually appear in cutscenes.

It also would help keep the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer alive. When it was announced that a multiplayer mode was going to be shoe-horned into the game, people feared for the worst. But Mass Effect 3 ‘s multiplayer actually ended up being a lot of fun. If the Mass Effect trilogy moved to the new console hotness, we’d be guaranteed at least one more year of online fun with friends.

But, one of the best things about a possible PS4 and Xbox One version of the Mass Effect trilogy is that it would be the ultimate edition of the first three games. Think about it: all of the DLC is available. If EA and BioWare made this happen, we could have every game and every bit of DLC available at once. No waiting for DLC pack prices to drop. We’d just have immediate access to every possible part of the story. I never picked up the Arrival or Omega DLC, because they never seemed that interesting to me and didn’t go on sale. But I’d gladly play through both, if they were part of a larger package.

Besides, a next-gen port of the Mass Effect trilogy could act as a bridge. We all know the next Mass Effect game is in development, and putting the first three games on the PS4 and Xbox One would make it much easier for data to carry over. (Completed Mass Effect 3 save data could determine the color of the UI in Mass Effect 4 !)

It’s just the right thing to do. So let’s all hope BioWare and EA come through, then be smart, wait a few months for a price drop, and relive Shepard’s odyssey on our new consoles.
