Halo fans will always have a soft spot for Halo 3. It was an important piece of punctuation for the series and Master Chief’s last appearance for five years. But half a decade is a long time in the gaming industry, so Halo 3’s popularity is understandably fading. In order to give Halo 3 the send off it deserves, fans are organizing a farewell party of sorts.
Starting on February 1st, organizers are hoping that gamers will set Halo 4 and Reach aside for a few days and spend some time getting reacquainted with TIME magazine’s 2007 Game of the Year. No one is trying to save Halo 3 from extinction. They’re just looking for an excuse to relive the glory days and bid the title adieu with style.
If you want to participate, simply dig out your copy of Halo 3 and log into Xbox LIVE. The celebration, dubbed The Halo 3 Great Journey , will be on February 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. So, you may have to call in sick or quit your job if you want to participate fully.
I actually really like the idea that a community like this would make an effort to organize a going away party at the last possible moment of a game’s popularity. It shows that Halo fans have slightly more cohesion than most other gaming communities. Could you imagine a similarly organized Call of Duty event? It would become an Internet-wide joke.
Funerals are typically a somber affair, but Halo 3’s doesn’t have to be. After all, it’s not exactly a funeral. We’re simply passing the torch. It’s like when you know that you’re going to have to divorce your wife because there’s a hot college girl that you’d rather see naked. You may as well take your wife on one last vacation, right?
My wife is going to love that analogy.
