Avenger Elites Hit the Market

Avenger Elites Hit the Market

Remember the Avenger controller line? They were a set of controller rigs that hook up to existing Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers that increase ability to hit every button at once. How do they manage that? Well, it’s actually pretty simple. Basically, there are a number of stiff (but adjustable) levers attached to springs, which then curl around and rest on your hand. These springs are then attached to the face buttons of the controller. By slightly moving your hand position on the controller you are then able to hit the face buttons without moving your thumb to actually hit them.

So, for example, the lever that hits the Y button on an Xbox 360 controller rests on your top knuckle of your left hand. By gently rocking your hand, you activate the spring and make it hit the button without moving your thumb. You can do this all while utilizing the triggers. Similarly, rocking your hand to the side will activate the B button and rocking your left hand will activate the X button. The only button that isn’t covered by the harness is the A button, which you’ll have to continue to hit with your thumb.

In addition, the new Avenger rig comes with straps that are attached to the triggers on the shoulders of the controllers. These serve a dual purpose. First of all, they allow you to pull on the straps with the same fingers that are gripping the controller. This allows you to use the triggers without moving your pointer finger. Secondly, you can adjust the tension on the straps to “pre-pull” the triggers for games that don’t need analog trigger sensitivity. For example, in shooters you only need to know if the trigger is depressed or not. The game doesn’t care how fast or hard you depress it. So you can tighten the strap to pre-pull the trigger to right before firing, making your guns fire on a hair trigger by minimizing the trigger travel distance.

Aside from this, the Avenger also comes with a built in stand. This stand is meant to make your controller more of a permanent fixture in your home. It allows you to steady your controller on a surface making it less likely to move around as you play.

An interesting note, the Avenger, even though it literally looks like you are strapping plastic, metal, and wires to your controller, has received somewhat decent reviews. The official site has glowing reviews by G4, Engadget, Kotaku, and Gizmodo. It also has been getting favorable reviews by people who have physical disabilities. The ability to hit buttons without using your thumb helps people with hand tremors, motor skill deficiencies, and even people who have lost fingers.

The Avenger comes in three different designs, apart from the standard black, featuring blood splatters, orange skulls, and red paint splatters. An Avenger costs fifty dollars on its official site, though an extra thirty will have to be dropped to get a print. You can learn more about The Avenger controller on its official website.
