Rockstar has been planning to unveil a new GTA V trailer for some time, but after their offices were flooded by a “bitch” named Hurricane Sandy, the curtain call got pushed back a little. But now that things are starting to settle down on the East Coast, the publisher has delivered their latest trailer into the anticipatory hands of GTA fans around the world.
As promised, the trailer shows off some of the new missions and vehicle types, but it also gives us a peak behind the curtain at the overarching story and interweaving character arcs. I’m sure that I’m not the only one on the Internet who’s watching this trailer obsessively, but there are several moments within the clip that deserve to be highlighted.
As a bonus, I’ve organized my thoughts into a convenient, bulleted list, so that you can easily copy them down and use them as conversation points at fundraisers and cocktail parties:
The trailer had an unexpectedly cinematic feel to it, which makes the game itself seem more extravagant. I can’t decide if that’s because I already know that GTA V has a larger world than Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA IV combined, or if modern-day trailers just have better production value.
We’re getting an interesting look at the individual character arcs. Trevor has some violent tendencies. He sets off a couple of explosions and is shown stomping on someone’s skull. It wouldn’t be a GTA game without some excessive violence.
I never thought I’d hear a Stevie Wonder song played in the background of a murder scene.
Michael is a veteran bank robber whose obnoxious son is a perpetual source of disappointment. He comments that Franklin, the third protagonist, is the “son I always wanted.” According to Rockstar, Michael is retired and living in witness protection.
Franklin’s character is still a bit mysterious. He works as a repo man and slings dope. Plus, based on the trailer, he has a large collection of cars. Perhaps he’s a getaway driver?
The tone of the trailer is decidedly more lighthearted than many of the previous titles. It feels like the trailer to an action-comedy film.
Trevor drives a dune buggy of some kind. That might be fun to steal.
Seriously. Trevor is nuts. Over the course of this trailer, he crashes a motorcycle, drives a jeep out of an airborne cargo plane, and leaps from a freight train just as it collides with another train. Rockstar says that he’s “the most psychopathic criminal to ever share the lead in a Grand Theft Auto game” and it shows.
